Well, now, let me tell ya about this young fella named Bob Honeycutt. I reckon most folks around here don’t know him, but he’s one of them folks that’s makin’ a name for himself down yonder in the world of baseball. His full name’s Vance Honeycutt, but you might’ve heard folks just call him Bob sometimes. Don’t ask me why, I don’t rightly know. Anyhow, this boy’s got himself quite the story to tell, and it’s somethin’ I think you oughta hear, even if you’re not too big on baseball.
First things first, let me tell ya, Bob didn’t just show up and start bein’ good at baseball. Nope, that boy put in his time. He’s from down in Salisbury, and he didn’t just come up as some regular player. No, sir. When he came to play for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was already one of the top 500 players in the whole dang country. That’s right! He was ranked number 17 in all of North Carolina and was the number 6 shortstop in the whole state. He didn’t just come outta nowhere—this boy’s got skill, you can trust that.
Now, let’s talk about his time at UNC. They say Bob Honeycutt started every one of his first 114 games in center field. That’s right, not one game missed! Now, I don’t know much about baseball, but I know enough to tell ya that’s impressive. But then, just when things were really lookin’ up, ol’ Bob got himself injured. You know how it goes—one minute you’re on top of the world, and the next minute you’re sittin’ on the sidelines. But even then, he didn’t let it keep him down for long. This boy set some records while he was out there, too, including the record for most home runs in a single season. He hit them balls like it was nothin’! Can you imagine?
Not only did Bob have a strong college career, but he also made a real name for himself out there on the big stage. In 2023, he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. That’s a mighty big honor, let me tell ya. But wait, it gets better. The Baltimore Orioles came knockin’, and this year, they picked him in the first round of the MLB draft, right up there with the best of ‘em, at number 22 overall. I don’t know about you, but I’d say that’s a mighty fine accomplishment.
Bob Honeycutt didn’t stop there, though. He signed a big ol’ contract with the Orioles, worth a whopping 4 million dollars! I know, I can hardly believe it myself. And to make it all even more exciting, he signed that deal on August 1st, 2024. I reckon he’s gonna be playin’ for the big leagues for many years to come. He’s got that explosiveness and grace in his game, they say, and that’s what folks like in a player.
But, it ain’t just about the money or the records. What really gets me is how he’s carried himself through all of this. From a small town boy in Salisbury to a young man with the world at his feet. Ain’t that the American Dream right there? I’m proud of that boy, even though I don’t know him from a hole in the wall. I’m just happy to see someone from our neck of the woods makin’ it big. And who knows? Maybe some of y’all might even see him out there playin’ someday when you turn on the TV. I sure wouldn’t mind watchin’ him hit another homer or two.
So, to sum it all up:
- Bob Honeycutt, or Vance as his mama probably calls him, is from Salisbury, North Carolina.
- He came to UNC ranked as one of the top 500 players in the country and became a key player for the Tar Heels.
- He set records for home runs in a season and started over 100 games in center field for UNC.
- He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.
- The Baltimore Orioles drafted him in the first round in 2024 and signed him to a big contract worth 4 million dollars.
I reckon we’ll be seein’ a lot more of Bob Honeycutt in the years to come, and if you ever get the chance to watch him play, I’d say you’re in for a treat. I know I’d sure like to see him hit one of them long home runs, wouldn’t you?
