Oh, you know, back in the day there was this fella called Mickey Mantle, and boy, let me tell ya, he was somethin’ special. That man could hit a baseball like no other. Now, this Mickey, they called him “The Mick” or sometimes “The Commerce Comet,” I reckon ‘cause he was quick and sure as shootin’. Played for them New York Yankees for years, from 1951 to 1968. Yep, his whole career was with them Yankees, don’t know how they ever did without him.
Now, let me tell ya about his skills. This man wasn’t just any ol’ baseball player. Oh no, he was a star. They put him in the All-Star Games 20 times, can you believe it? That’s a whole lot of times. And let’s not forget he won a Gold Glove in 1962 for his play out there in center field. He wasn’t just hittin’ the ball, he was out there makin’ plays too, runnin’ around like a wild thing.
And this Mickey? He had some big ol’ moments. Like in them World Series games. I heard he hit 18 home runs in just 12 World Series appearances. That’s some mighty fine hittin’, if ya ask me. He was on seven of them Yankees teams that won the World Series, always comin’ through when they needed him. It wasn’t no fluke, neither. He was the real deal.
Now, I ain’t one for fancy words and such, but the thing about Mickey is that he wasn’t just good on the field. He was tough too. He played through some awful injuries, bless his heart. They say once he had to be carried off the field on a stretcher, and yet, he kept goin’. That’s the kind of player he was. Even when his knee was all tore up, he didn’t quit. Played through a torn ACL! I can’t even imagine it. It’s like when you got a hurt back but still gotta haul them buckets of water from the well. You just don’t stop.
But don’t think all this glory came easy. Oh no, Mickey had his struggles. He battled with his health, and in the end, that darn cancer got him. I remember when I heard he passed away in 1995, it was a sad day. He was only 63. He left a big ol’ hole in the world of baseball, that’s for sure. I heard his doctor say that even though he passed, Mickey left behind a legacy that folks would remember for years to come. And they sure do, don’t they?
When you think of Mickey Mantle, you think of someone who never gave up, no matter what. Even when his body was beat up, he was out there playing like it was his last game. He might’ve been from Commerce, Oklahoma, but the way he played made him a legend across the whole country, and even beyond. People still talk about him, still watch them old games on TV, ‘cause Mickey’s name is written in the history books, big as life.
He wasn’t just a player; he was a part of history. He stole 153 bases in his career, a mighty fine feat for a man who wasn’t exactly known for runnin’ fast. But when he needed to, he sure could steal a base. He had a high of 21 steals in 1959. That’s somethin’ folks talk about when they’re tellin’ stories about the good ol’ days of baseball.
So, if you ever get the chance, remember Mickey Mantle. Remember how he hit them home runs, stole them bases, and played with all his heart. Ain’t no other player like him, and I don’t reckon there ever will be. Mickey wasn’t just a name on a jersey, he was a symbol of what it means to give it all you got, even when the world’s tryin’ to take you down.
