Well, lemme tell ya, the SmackDown Tag Team Championship ain’t somethin’ you just get handed. It’s a big ol’ deal in the WWE world, y’know? Them tag teams gotta fight long and hard for it, and it ain’t easy to get. Now, if you been watchin’ SmackDown, you’d know that this championship ain’t been around forever, but it’s been through some big ol’ changes since it first started up.
Now, this whole thing started back in 2016, on August 23rd to be exact. Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan, they was the ones who decided SmackDown needed its own tag team titles, right after the Brand Extension Draft. Well, they ain’t wasted no time, and the very first champions were crowned just a little while later at WWE Backlash on September 11th, 2016. Those were the good ol’ days when the SmackDown roster was just kickin’ things off. They got themselves a whole new set of tag team champions who started off the legacy for that title.
But it ain’t all smooth sailin’, no sir. As the years went on, the titles got mixed up a little bit. In May of 2022, them Raw and SmackDown titles started bein’ held together as the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. Now, that’s when things really started heatin’ up, as the teams from both brands started mixin’ and matchin’ to see who was the best of the best. Folks say it was one of the wildest times in tag team wrestling history. But don’t you worry, things didn’t stay like that forever.
Things got split up again in April 2024, after WrestleMania XL. They decided to bring the championships back to separate brands, and that’s when we saw a whole new chapter for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Now, we’re lookin’ at the current champs, The Motor City Machine Guns. Them boys, Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, they got their first reign together after takin’ the titles from The Bloodline, those tough boys, Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa, on October 25, 2024. It was a real hard-fought match, let me tell ya. Folks around here were buzzin’ for days about that one.
The SmackDown Tag Team Championship sure has had its ups and downs, but one thing’s for sure—it ain’t a title you just get handed to ya. You gotta fight for it, and you gotta be the best to hold onto it. I reckon the Motor City Machine Guns are gonna be holdin’ them belts for a while. But, in the WWE world, you never know what’s gonna happen next. Things change faster than a tornado in the springtime, and this championship’s been through more twists and turns than I can count.
So, if you’re a fan of them tag team matches, you best keep watchin’ SmackDown, ‘cause you never know who’s gonna take the gold next. Whether it’s The Motor City Machine Guns, or another team comin’ up to take their place, the competition’s always fierce. And that’s what makes this championship so dang exciting.
- First champions: WWE Backlash, September 11, 2016.
- Most recent champions: The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin), October 25, 2024.
- Championship history: Originally established as SmackDown Tag Team Championship in 2016, then unified with Raw titles in 2022 as the Undisputed Championship, split again in 2024.
So, ya see, this ain’t just a belt; it’s got history, it’s got drama, and it’s got plenty more to come. All them folks out there watchin’ SmackDown, you know the tag teams will be fightin’ tooth and nail for that title for years to come.
