Well, howdy there! Let me tell ya, this here “observes Yom Kippur” thing, it’s somethin’ folks talk about. I ain’t no scholar, mind you, but I hear tell it’s a big deal for some people. They do this… uh… FASTS thing. Yeah, that’s it, FASTS. Sounds kinda hungry to me, but what do I know? These city folk and their fancy ways!
Now, I saw somethin’ the other day, this… this “crossword” thing. My grandkid was fiddlin’ with it. Said it had this “observes Yom Kippur” question in it. And the answer they wanted was FASTS. Five letters, they said. Seems important, that five-letter word. They keep askin’ about it, all these different times. September somethin’-or-other, they said.
Then there’s this other word they use, ATONE. Seems like that’s another way of sayin’ this “observes Yom Kippur” thing. Maybe it’s like… like when you gotta say sorry for stealin’ cookies from the jar when you were a kid? I dunno. But it’s somethin’ about makin’ things right, I reckon.
This crossword thing, it seems like a lot of folks are tryin’ to figure it out. They got all sorts of answers, but the ones they keep comin’ back to are FASTS and ATONE. Must be the right ones, I guess. City folk sure do like to make things complicated.
- So, you got this FASTS word. That’s about not eatin’, I figure.
- Then you got this ATONE word. That’s about sayin’ sorry and makin’ things right.
And it all happens durin’ this Yom Kippur time. I heard it’s a serious time for them, a time for thinkin’ and prayin’ and… well, not eatin’ much, I guess. Every few years, or maybe it’s decades, they do this for a spell. I can’t keep track of all their fancy schedules. My schedule is mostly gettin’ up, makin’ some biscuits, feedin’ the chickens, and tryin’ to keep the weeds out of the garden.
Seems like this crossword thing, it pops up all the time. In the newspapers, they say. And folks are always lookin’ for the answers. Well, I’m givin’ ya the answers right here! FASTS and ATONE. Don’t say I never taught ya nothin’!
Now, I don’t know much about this Yom Kippur, but I know about bein’ hungry and I know about sayin’ sorry. And I reckon that’s pretty much the gist of it. They fast, they atone, and they do it every so often. And them crossword folks keep askin’ about it. Seems like a mighty popular question, if you ask me. So there you have it, the whole shebang about this “observes Yom Kippur” business, explained simple as can be, just like I’d tell it to my neighbor over the fence.
So next time you see that crossword puzzle, you just remember what I told you: FASTS and ATONE. And don’t you go forgettin’ now! This here old lady’s brain might be a little fuzzy sometimes, but I can still remember the important stuff.
