Alright, let’s talk about them White Sox pitchers, the ones who won a whole bunch of games, you know, 20 or more. That’s a lot of wins, let me tell ya. Back in the old days, they had some real good fellas throwin’ the ball.
Them fellas in 1920, that was somethin’ special, I tell ya.
- Red Faber
- Lefty Williams
- Eddie Cicotte
- Dickie Kerr
All four of ’em won 20 games! Can ya believe that? Nowadays, you hardly see one fella win that many. Back then, they was tough, them boys. They pitched and pitched, didn’t complain none.
Now, I heard tell of a fella named Billy Pierce. He won 20 for the White Sox too, back in 1956. That’s a long time ago, but folks still remember him. Guess he musta been pretty darn good. They say he had a good arm, that Billy Pierce.
There’s been other good pitchers too, over the years. Lots of ‘em. But winning 20, that’s a different story. It ain’t easy, no sir. You gotta be strong, gotta be smart, and gotta have a little luck, I reckon. Pitchin’ ain’t just about throwin’ hard, ya know. It’s about foolin’ them batters, makin’ ‘em swing and miss.
I hear they got all sorts of records for these things. Like who pitched the most innings, who had the lowest ERA, all that fancy stuff. Me, I don’t pay much mind to that. I just care about the wins. Wins is what matters, right? If you win 20 games, you’re a good pitcher in my book, plain and simple.
They got this fella, Luke Appling, played a whole heap of games for the White Sox. Not a pitcher, mind you, but he played a lot. And then there’s Paul Konerko, another one played a long time. But we’re talkin’ about pitchers here, the fellas who win them games from the mound.
There was this Scott Erickson fella, pitched for the Minnesota Twins in 1991. Won 20 games, he did. He was young too, only 23. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? A young fella winnin’ all them games. Shows ya what hard work and talent can do.
And then they got fellas like Frank Smith, Clark Griffith, and LaMarr Hoyt, all won 24 games. That’s even more than 20! Can you imagine? They musta been somethin’ else. Pitchin’ their hearts out, day in and day out. Makes ya tired just thinkin’ about it.
You know, some folks say baseball ain’t what it used to be. Maybe so, maybe not. But one thing’s for sure, winnin’ 20 games is still a big deal. It always has been, and it always will be. It takes a special kind of pitcher to do that. A fella with grit, with determination, with that somethin’ special ya can’t quite put your finger on.
So, next time you’re watchin’ them White Sox, or any baseball team for that matter, pay attention to the pitchers. They’re the ones who make it all happen. And if ya see one winnin’ a whole bunch of games, 20 or more, well, you know you’re watchin’ somethin’ special. A real honest-to-goodness pitcher, just like them fellas back in 1920.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Them 20-game winners, they’re somethin’ special, they are. And don’t you forget it.
