Alright, so listen up, y’all. We gotta talk about this whole Kenny Brooks replacement thing goin’ on at Virginia Tech. Yeah, that basketball coach, the one who took the team all the way to the Final Four. He up and left for Kentucky, can you believe it? Just like that, poof! Gone.
Now, they say he left for the same job over at Kentucky. Folks ’round here are callin’ it “leavin’ for Lexington.” Sound fancy, don’t it? But it just means he packed his bags and went off to coach a different bunch of girls. After eight years in Blacksburg, too! EIGHT YEARS! That’s a long time to be somewhere, plantin’ your roots and all. And then, bam! He’s gone.
So, Virginia Tech, they had to go and find themselves a new coach, right? Can’t have a team without a coach, that’s for sure. They went and hired this Megan Duffy woman from Marquette. Mar-what? Marquette. Never heard of it. But I guess she’s a good coach, or so they say. They say she took her team, the Golden Eagles, to the NCAA Tournament a bunch of times. Sounds impressive, I reckon.
- They say she’s young, too. Thirty-nine years old. That’s practically a baby in my book! But I guess these young folks know what they’re doin’ these days. This Duffy girl, she had a good record over at Marquette. Won a lot of games, they say. More wins than losses, that’s for sure. Somethin’ like 110 wins and 46 losses. That sounds pretty good, even to an old lady like me.
- Now, some folks were talkin’ ’bout other coaches they could’ve hired. Names I ain’t never heard before. Poppy somethin’-or-other. He went to Clemson. And there were others, I’m sure. But they picked this Duffy girl, so I guess she must be the best one for the job.
Virginia Tech announced it before Kentucky even did. That’s kinda funny, ain’t it? Like they were sayin’, “He’s all yours, Kentucky! We got ourselves a new coach already!” Good for them, I say. Gotta move on, can’t be cryin’ over spilled milk, or in this case, a lost coach.
One of the players, this Georgia Amoore girl, she decided to follow Coach Brooks to Kentucky. Can’t blame her, I guess. Loyalty and all that. She said it’s gonna be a big change. New conference, new facilities, new everythin’. Well, duh! Of course it’s gonna be new, she’s goin’ to a whole new place! Kids these days, they state the obvious sometimes.
This Duffy woman, she’s the eighth head coach in Virginia Tech history, they say. Eighth! That’s a lot of coaches comin’ and goin’. Hope she sticks around longer than Brooks did. It ain’t easy on these girls, havin’ a new coach every few years. They get used to one way of doin’ things, and then boom! They gotta learn it all over again. It’s like replanting your garden every year. Takes time and effort, you know?
So, there you have it. Kenny Brooks is gone, Megan Duffy is in. End of story, right? Well, not quite. Now we gotta see if this Duffy girl can coach. Can she get these Hokies back to the Final Four? Can she win games? That’s what really matters, ain’t it? All this talk about records and tournaments, it don’t mean nothin’ if you can’t win games. So, we’ll just have to wait and see. Give her a chance, I say. Every dog has its day, and maybe this Duffy girl will have hers, too.
And that’s the whole shebang about the Kenny Brooks replacement. It’s a new chapter for Virginia Tech basketball. Hope it’s a good one. Lord knows, these girls deserve a good coach. Someone who’s gonna stick around and help ’em win. That’s all they want, and that’s all we want for ’em, too.
