Alright, so listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about this fella, Edgar Alvarez. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? But he plays baseball, see? Now, I don’t know much about that fancy city-folk sport, but I hear tell he’s pretty good.
This Edgar fella, he got picked by the Chicago Cubs. You know, them fellas with the bear on their hats. They picked him in the 8th round of the draft, whatever that means. Sounds important though, like picking the best corn in the field. He was the 242nd pick, so not the first corn picked, but still good corn, ya know?
Now, this boy, he’s a big ‘un. Six foot four, they say. That’s taller than old man Johnson’s corn stalks! And he plays first base. That’s the spot where you catch the ball, I reckon. He played for some school down south, Nicholls State University. Never heard of it, but I guess they got a good baseball team.
- Big boy, 6 foot 4
- Plays first base
- Went to Nicholls State
Folks are saying he’s a good hitter. Real good. Got a bat like a hickory stick, I bet. They say he hit .411 this year. That’s a lot of hits, even I know that. He even smacked 29 home runs in just three years. Musta knocked the cover off that ball a few times, eh?
He’s 23 years old, this Edgar. Not a young’un no more. But I guess in baseball, that’s still young enough to be good. He was born in Orlando, Florida back in 2001. That ain’t so long ago, makes me feel old as dirt. Anyways, the Cubs gave him a bonus, some money to play for them. Almost ten million dollars they got to spend on all their new players, I heard. That’s a whole lotta corn money, let me tell ya.
Some folks are callin’ him a “metric darling.” Don’t know what that means, sounds like somethin’ a city slicker would say. But I guess it means he’s good at hittin’ the ball hard. They say he ain’t the best at catchin’ the ball, but who needs to catch when you can hit it a country mile, right?
So, that’s the story of Edgar Alvarez, the baseball player. Big fella, good hitter, plays for the Cubs. He’s got to hit, they say, since his defense ain’t great. But boy can he hit! Seems like he’s got a bright future ahead of him. Maybe one day I’ll even see him on that there TV box, hittin’ home runs and makin’ them Cubs proud. Or maybe I’ll just stick to watchin’ the chickens peck at the ground. Same thing, really, just different kinds of balls flyin’ around.
Now, they say he’s one of the most fun picks of the draft, that’s what the fellers talkin’ on the radio said. All because of how hard he hits the ball. He might not be the best fielder, but that bat of his is something special. They compare him to some big hitters, fellas who knock the ball out of the park all the time. That’s what the Cubs are hopin’ for, I reckon. A fella who can bring in the runs and win them some games.
So, there you have it. Edgar Alvarez. Remember the name, y’all. He might just be the next big thing in baseball. And if he ain’t, well, at least he got a good swing. And that’s more than I can say for most folks I know.
