Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Devin Haney fella. Folks been talkin’ a lot, you know? He’s one of them boxer fellas, punches people for a livin’. Devin Haney, that’s his name. Heard he’s pretty good at it, too. They say he’s won a bunch of fights, got all sorts of shiny belts and whatnots.
Now, I ain’t no boxing expert, mind you. I just watch it sometimes when the TV ain’t showin’ nothin’ else. But this Haney boy, he’s been stirrin’ up a hornet’s nest, that’s for sure. Said some things he probably shouldn’t have, you know? About not losin’ to certain kinds of people. Folks got their backs up about it, and I reckon they got a right to be.
They say he’s from America. Born in ’98, so he’s still a young’un in my book. But he’s done gone and got himself into a heap of trouble with his mouth. Somethin’ about “white boys” and losin’ fights. Lord have mercy, people didn’t like that one bit. They started callin’ him names, sayin’ he’s this and that.
- He’s a boxer, yeah, fights in the ring
- He’s American, that’s what they tell me
- Folks are mad at him, that much I know.
He went and fought this other fella, Garcia, I think his name was. Big fight, everyone was watchin’. Haney got knocked down a few times, looked like he was in trouble. But then they said Garcia cheated, somethin’ about takin’ medicine he shouldn’t have. So they changed the win, made it a no-contest, whatever that means. Just a whole lotta fuss if you ask me.
Then there was this other fella, Lomachenko. Haney said those things about the white boys because of him, see? Seems like Haney got a big mouth and it gets him in trouble more than his fists do. He’s gotta learn to keep his trap shut sometimes, that’s what my old man used to say.
Haney, he’s a lightweight champion, or he was anyway. They say he moved up to a heavier weight class. I don’t know much about that, sounds like a bunch of fancy talk to me. All I know is he hits people and people hit him back. And sometimes he talks too much.
He started fightin’ when he was just a kid, way down in Mexico and Australia, they tell me. Now he’s fightin’ for respect. Well, respect ain’t somethin’ you get just by winnin’ fights, I reckon. You gotta earn it by bein’ a decent person too. And that means watchin’ what comes out of your mouth.
They also said this Devin Haney fella was the youngest undisputed champion with all them belts. That sounds mighty impressive, I ain’t gonna lie. But all that don’t mean nothin’ if you ain’t got no respect. Money and belts, they come and go. But a good name, that’s somethin’ you keep forever. Or lose forever, dependin’ on how you act.
So that’s the story of Devin Haney as far as I can tell. He’s a good fighter, maybe even a great one. But he’s got a lot to learn about life, that much is clear. He needs to stop talkin’ and start listenin’ for once. Maybe then he’ll earn the respect he seems to crave.
Anyways, that’s just my two cents. Probably ain’t worth much, but there it is.
