Alright, so you wanna hear about this Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, eh? Well, lemme tell ya, those two were somethin’ else back in the day. Tennis, tennis, tennis, that’s all ya heard about. They were like the king and queen of the court, ya know?
Jimmy Connors, that fella was a fighter. Always scrappin’ and runnin’ all over the place. They say he played a whole heap of matches, more than anyone else, I reckon. Won a ton of ‘em too. Like, a real, real lot. I heard someone say he won over a thousand matches! Can ya believe that? That’s more matches than I’ve had hot dinners, I tell ya! And titles? Don’t even get me started. He had more trophies than my grandma had jars of pickles, and that’s sayin’ somethin’. They said he won somethin’ like 109 titles, imagine that! He was a tough one, that Jimmy.
Now, Chris Evert, she was different. Not as loud and shouty as Jimmy, but just as good, maybe even better. She was smooth, like butter on a hot biscuit. They called her game steady, and that’s just what it was. She didn’t make a lot of mistakes, just kept hittin’ that ball back and forth, back and forth, until her opponent just wore out. Smart gal, that Chris.
- Chris, she won a whole bunch of matches too. More than a thousand! First one to ever do it, they say. Beat all the other gals.
- And them trophies? She had a whole shelf full of ‘em. More than 150 tournament titles they said! My goodness, that’s a lot of shiny things! It sounds like she was always winning somethin’ or other.
- And let’s not forget the doubles, she played a lot of those too, somethin’ about 38 women’s doubles, she was a busy bee, that one.
They were both American, ya know? And back then, tennis was a big deal in America. People would line up for miles just to watch ‘em play. These two, they helped make tennis popular, I tell ya. Everyone wanted to be like Chris and Jimmy.
They even won the U.S. Open the same year, 1978, I think it was. Chris beat some gal, and Jimmy beat some fella. Don’t remember their names, but it was a big deal. Folks were cheerin’ and hollerin’ and clappin’ till their hands were sore. It was like a big ol’ party, but with tennis balls flyin’ everywhere.
And you know, they even helped each other out sometimes. I heard a story once about how Jimmy told Chris how to beat some other gal, and it worked! Chris won the match, just like Jimmy said she would. They were a good team, even when they weren’t playin’ together. It sounds like they knew each other’s game pretty well, like they could read each other’s minds on the court.
Now, Jimmy had this other fella he used to play against a lot, McEnroe, I think his name was. Those two, they were somethin’ else too. Always arguin’ with the refs and makin’ a fuss. But they were good players, both of ‘em. They played a lot of matches against each other. McEnroe won more of them, but Jimmy put up a good fight, always did. They were like oil and water, those two, always clashin’. But it made for good watchin’, I tell ya.
And sometimes, Chris and Jimmy would play these special matches, exhibition matches they called ‘em. Just for fun, ya know? And they’d make a whole lot of money doin’ it too. Someone told me they got paid a whole heap of cash just to show up, and then even more if they won! Land sakes, that’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! Must be nice to be good at tennis, eh?
So yeah, that’s the story of Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, as best as I can remember it. They were great tennis players, the best of their time, some folks say. And they made tennis exciting for everyone. They were somethin’ special, those two. And that’s all there is to it.
