Well, let me tell you somethin’ about these here Final Fantasy pins. My grandson, he’s always goin’ on about this Final Fantasy. Says it’s a game, a big one. I don’t know nothin’ about games, but he sure loves it. And he’s got these little pins, calls ’em Final Fantasy pins. Says they’re special, somethin’ about collectin’ them.
Now, I seen these pins. They got all sorts of things on ’em. Some got little men, some got little monsters, some got words I don’t understand. But they’re all shiny and colorful, I’ll give ’em that. He keeps ’em in a little box, all lined up nice and neat. Don’t let nobody touch ’em, neither. Says they’re worth somethin’.
He’s got one pin, says it’s from Final Fantasy VII. That’s his favorite, he says. It’s got a picture of a fella with spiky hair. Looks kinda silly to me, but he loves it. Says it’s a popular one, this Final Fantasy VII. Lots of folks like it, he says. And those pins that made like old-timey figures, them is called polygon figures. I don’t know about no polygon, but they look neat, my grandson told me that.

Then there’s these other pins, says Final Fantasy XIV on ’em. He says that’s a different game, but still Final Fantasy. These ones got little pictures on ’em, like little symbols. He says they mean somethin’ in the game, like if you’re sick or somethin’. I don’t know nothin’ about that, but they look kinda cute, I guess.
He’s always lookin’ for more of these pins. Says he wants to collect ’em all. He goes on the computer, looks at pictures of ’em. Says there’s all kinds, from all different Final Fantasy games. Some are common, some are rare, he says. He’s always talkin’ about which ones he wants next. It is some kind of fandom pins, he said to me one day. I don’t know what is fandom, but if it is about pins, it must be good.
I asked him once, why he likes these pins so much. He said, “It’s ’cause I love Final Fantasy, grandma.” Said it’s more than just a game to him. It’s somethin’ special. I don’t really understand it, but if it makes him happy, that’s all that matters. These Final Fantasy things are deep in his heart. I don’t know about hearts, but he sure loves them.
He showed me some other pins too, called enamel pins. I asked him what that means, enamel. He says it’s what makes ’em shiny. Well, they are shiny, I’ll give ’em that. And they got all kinds of designs on ’em. He’s got a bunch of these Final Fantasy 7 enamel pins. That spiky-haired fella is on a lot of ’em. He is popular for sure.
These pins, they ain’t just for show, neither. He puts ’em on his jacket, on his bag. Shows ’em off to his friends. They all got ’em too, these Final Fantasy pins. They trade ’em, talk about ’em, get all excited about ’em. It’s a whole thing, he says. A whole community of folks who like these pins. It is a big deal to those young people.
He says you can buy these pins online. Says there are lots of places to get ’em. He’s always showin’ me pictures of ones he wants. Some are cheap, some are expensive. He’s always savin’ up his money to buy more. These final fantasy pin is not cheap, and the price is different. But my grandson don’t care, he just want them all, no matter how much.
I don’t know much about this Final Fantasy, but I know it makes my grandson happy. And these pins, these Final Fantasy pins, they’re a part of that. They’re more than just little pieces of metal. They’re somethin’ special to him. And that’s all that matters to me. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy. Even if I don’t understand all this Final Fantasy stuff. It’s his thing, and I’m glad he’s got somethin’ he loves so much.
He tells me one day, “Grandma, you should see all these different Final Fantasy pins.” Says there’s pins for every game, every character, every somethin’. I just nod and smile. I don’t need to see ’em. I just need to see him happy. And these pins, they do that. So, they’re alright in my book. Even if they are just little pieces of metal with pictures on ’em.
