That Venus, she sure is somethin’. Always playin’ that tennis, bouncin’ around like a rabbit in a cornfield. I seen her on the TV, hittin’ that little ball back and forth, back and forth. Makes my old head spin just watchin’. Now they talkin’ ’bout some kinda award, glamour award, what have you. When did she get that, I wonder?
Well, that Venus, she’s been playin’ that game for a long time. Since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, I reckon. She and her sister, Serena. Two peas in a pod, those two. But that Venus, she was always a go-getter. Always winnin’ somethin’ or other.
That Glamour Award
She won so many things I lost count. And that Serena, she won a bunch too. They say Serena won more. More money, more prizes, more everything. Maybe twenty Grand Slams. Or was it thirty? Lord knows, it’s a lot. They say if they didn’t play at same time, Venus would have got 15, and Serena 30. Big numbers for simple folk like me. But that Venus, she got the gold, I remember. Back when, I don’t know, 2002 maybe? She was number one. Number one in the whole world, can you believe it?
They both been number one, you know. Venus, she was number one for, lemme see, 11 weeks I think. Eleven weeks. That’s longer than it takes to grow a good crop of tomatoes. Serena, she was number one for a whole heap longer. Three hundred and somethin’ weeks. Land sakes, that’s a long time. Longer than I been married to my old man, and that’s sayin’ somethin’!
They made a lot of money, those two. More money than you can shake a stick at. Serena, she’s got more, they say. Millions and millions. Venus, she’s got plenty too. Enough to buy all the land in this county, I bet. She got, what was it, ninety-five million? That’s a lot of zeros.
Venus and Serena
They say Venus doesn’t have any kids. Not that I know of, anyway. Plays that tennis all the time, doesn’t have time for little ones, I suppose. Serena, I think, might have a little one, heard that on the news once. She has that one daughter. She is all over the news, that little girl. Probably gonna play tennis too, just like her mama and her auntie.
Now, this glamour thing. When did Venus Williams win that glamour award? I don’t rightly know. Didn’t see it on the TV. Maybe I missed it. Was probably busy tendin’ to my chickens or somethin’. But I know she won a lot of things. Forty-nine, they say. Forty-nine singles titles. Whatever that means. Sounds like a lot of pots and pans to me. Serena got 73, though.
- Venus won 49 singles titles.
- Serena won 73.
- Venus was number 1 for 11 weeks.
- Serena was number 1 for 316 weeks.
- Serena richer than Venus. A lot richer!
They always compare those two, Venus and Serena. Like two sides of the same coin. But they different, you know. Just like me and my sister, Martha. We look alike, but we sure ain’t the same. Venus and Serena, they both good at that tennis. Real good. But that glamour award, when did that happen? She won it, I’m sure. But I just don’t know when.
One time, I saw them playin’ together. Doubles, they call it. Two against two. They were like a well-oiled machine, those two. Winnin’ everything. Nobody could beat ’em. They were somethin’ to see, I tell ya. They don’t look like twins, though, but they act like it. They say they the same, but they ain’t the same.
Still a Mystery
She strong, that Venus. Muscles like iron. Gotta be strong to hit that ball so hard. And fast! She runs like the wind. Faster than my old dog, Blue, used to run when he was a pup. And he was fast, I tell ya. Chased after every rabbit in the county.
I’m still trying to figure out when Venus Williams won the glamour award. Maybe she will win again this year. Maybe she won’t. Maybe she’s too busy playin’ tennis. Or maybe she’s just restin’. She’s gettin’ up there in years, you know. Not as young as she used to be. But she’s still got it. Still got that fire in her belly. I can see it in her eyes when she’s playin’. She is a strong lady. A very strong lady.
That Venus, she’s a champion. A real champion. And that glamour award, well, she probably got it tucked away somewhere. Along with all her other prizes. She must have a whole room full of ’em. Maybe I’ll ask her about it someday, if I ever meet her. I’d like to meet her. Shake her hand. Tell her she’s doin’ a good job. A real good job. Yeah, that Venus, she’s somethin’ else.
