Today I tried something I never thought I’d do. I took a class of gymnastics. I’ve always been a bit of a clutz, but lately, I’ve been wanting to push my physical limits. So, I searched for “AKM gymnastics” and found this place called AKM United Stars Gymnastics Academy, it’s right here in Amarillo on McCormick Rd.
When I got there, I saw many people, so I thought it’s a good place. I signed up, a little nervous, but the staff was super friendly and welcoming. They made me feel like part of their community right away.
The class started, and we began with some warm-up exercises. I followed along, trying to keep up with the others. It was tough! Gymnastics requires a lot of balance, strength, and flexibility, all things I’m not particularly known for. But I was determined to give it my best shot.
- Balance: This was a real struggle for me. I wobbled and stumbled, but I kept trying.
- Strength: Some of the exercises were tough. I could feel my arms, legs, and core working hard.
- Flexibility: Let’s just say I’m not the most flexible person. But I stretched as much as I could.
- Agility: I’m not sure but I felt like a baby. But each time I tried, I could feel myself getting a bit better.
- Coordination: My body didn’t always do what my brain wanted it to do. But the instructors were patient and gave me tips.
We moved on to some basic movements on different apparatuses. They showed us the vault, uneven bars, and some floor exercises. I tried each one, and it was a humbling experience, to say the least.
Difficult Dismounts
One of the hardest parts was the dismounts. They showed us something called “The Biles” on the beam, which is apparently super difficult. It involves some crazy twisting in the air. I didn’t even attempt that, of course! Just watching was impressive enough.
By the end of the class, I was exhausted but also exhilarated. I had pushed myself hard and learned a lot. I might not be the next Simone Biles, but I felt a sense of accomplishment. I’m definitely going back. I want to see how much I can improve over time. It’s a challenge, but I’m excited to take it on.
If any of you are in Amarillo and looking for a gymnastics place, I’d say check out AKM United Stars. It seems like a solid spot with great people. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there!
