Okay, so yesterday, I was trying to solve this crossword puzzle in the New York Times, you know, the usual Saturday morning routine. And I stumbled upon this clue: “compatriot.” I was stuck for a while, scratching my head, trying to come up with a word that fits.
First, I tried to think of synonyms for “compatriot.” I mumbled to myself, “Countryman? Nah, too long. Fellow citizen? Nope, doesn’t fit either.” My brain was just drawing blanks. I even googled “compatriot definition” to make sure I really understood the word. It showed “a person born, residing, or holding citizenship in the same country as another. ” or “companion.” It didn’t help too much at that moment, so i had to do more search.
Then, I decided to look specifically for crossword puzzle help. I searched for “compatriot nyt crossword clue” and found a bunch of crossword solver websites. I clicked on a few of them and scrolled through the results. Some suggested the answer in seven-letter, some suggested it in nine-letter.
Finally, I saw it: “PAISANO.” That was the seven-letter word that all these clue answer websites are suggesting. “Aha!” I exclaimed. It clicked right away. I filled it in the puzzle, and it fit perfectly with the other words. It turns out “paisano” is a word for a fellow countryman, especially among Italian speakers. Who knew?
I felt pretty good about solving that one. It was a tough clue, but I managed to figure it out with a little help from the internet. Crossword puzzles can be frustrating, but they’re also a fun way to challenge yourself and learn new words.
