Okay, so let’s talk about Kurt Schumacher and Ohio State. I recently got deep into this rabbit hole, and let me tell you, it’s been a trip down memory lane.
It all started when I was cleaning out my attic and stumbled upon some old college memorabilia. I found this old newspaper clipping about Ohio State football, and the name Kurt Schumacher jumped out at me. I vaguely remembered him being a big deal back in the day, so I decided to do some digging.
First off, this guy was a beast on the field. We’re talking a 6-foot-3, 200-plus-pound offensive lineman. Can you imagine? He joined the Buckeyes in ’71, fresh out of Lorain High School where he was already making a name for himself. I read that he came from a family that was all about sports in Northeast Ohio, so it makes sense that he ended up a star athlete.
So I started going through articles and old game summaries online. Schumacher played for Ohio State for four years, and man, did he leave his mark. He was a First-Team All-America left tackle in 1974, and he snagged the First-Team All-Big Ten selection not once, but twice, in ’73 and ’74. Talk about consistent performance!
After his college days, Schumacher got drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints in the 1975 NFL Draft. I found out that he was the 12th overall pick. It is sad to hear he passed away recently, at 70. It’s always tough to lose someone who gave so much to the sport.
Here’s what I managed to piece together about his time at Ohio State:
- 1971: Joined the Buckeyes as an offensive lineman.
- 1973: Earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors.
- 1974: Named First-Team All-America and repeated as First-Team All-Big Ten.
- 1975: Drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round.
Looking back, it’s clear that Schumacher was a major part of Ohio State’s football legacy. Ohio State had a pretty good run. Their last national championship was in 2014. But they haven’t been back to the title game since 2020, when they lost to Alabama. It seems like Schumacher’s era was a real highlight for the team.
It’s pretty wild to think about how much sports history is packed into these names and dates. Revisiting Schumacher’s career has been a nostalgic experience, reminding me of the glory days of Ohio State football and the incredible athletes who made it all happen. It’s a good reminder of how sports can connect us to the past in such a meaningful way.
Anyway, that’s my little dive into the history of Kurt Schumacher and Ohio State. It’s been fun to share this with you all. Maybe it’ll inspire some of you to dig into your own sports memories and see what you can uncover.
