Alright, I have been trying to put together a server for a few friends of mine, and I wanted to make it a real challenge, you know? So, I thought, “Why not try a zombie apocalypse modpack?” Sounded awesome in my head. I got the server running on Aternos and everything seemed fine until I realized the spawn rate of zombies was way too low for what I envisioned. We were just walking around, bored out of our minds.
I did some digging and found this mod called “In Control!” and thought, “This is it!” This mod looked like it could do everything I wanted by letting you tweak mob spawns. So, I got it installed, and let me tell you, it wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped.
First off, I had to locate the Minecraft application folder. On my Windows machine, I hit up the Run dialog from the Start menu, typed in %appdata%, and bam, there it was. If I were on a Mac, I’d just open Finder and navigate from there. Easy enough, right?
Then came the tricky part. I had to mess with these rule files to control the spawning. The mod’s page talked about these rule files for everything – spawning, loot, you name it. I just wanted more zombies, so I focused on the spawn rules.
- I made sure I had Minecraft Forge installed because, well, the mod needs it.
- Next, I went into the CurseForge app, you know, the place where you get all these mods? Clicked on “Create Custom Profile.”
- Picked my Minecraft version and the modloader (Forge, in this case) that matched what In Control! required.
- Then, I clicked on this little puzzle piece icon to browse and add mods. Found In Control!, added it to my profile, and I was feeling pretty good.
I jumped back into the game, went to the main menu, and clicked on “Mods.” There’s a button on the bottom left that says, “Open Mod Folders.” Clicked that, and it opened up the folder where I needed to drop the In Control! mod file. I did that, restarted the game, and boom, it was in.
Now, I had to figure out these rule files. I wanted to block hostile mobs from spawning where there was a direct line of sight to the sky. I spent hours reading through the mod’s documentation, trying to understand how to write these rules. It was a headache, I won’t lie. I played around with the settings, and after a lot of trial and error, I finally got it to work.
The Result
The moment of truth. I loaded up the server, and my friends and I jumped in. Zombies, zombies everywhere! It was intense, just like I wanted. We were running for our lives, scavenging for resources, and actually having a blast. The mod worked like a charm, blocking spawns in open areas and forcing us into the shadows. It was the challenge we were looking for, and it made the game a hundred times more exciting.
It was a rough ride getting there, but totally worth it. We’re still playing on that server, and it’s some of the most fun I’ve had in Minecraft. If you’re looking to spice up your game, I definitely recommend checking out In Control!. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty with those config files.
