Okay, so I was digging through some old boxes in the attic the other day, and I stumbled across my old sports card collection. I used to be super into collecting these things back in the day, and I had completely forgotten about them. This got me thinking, I wonder if any of these are worth anything now? Today, I’m diving into the 1990 Pro Set Series 2 football cards. I picked this set because, honestly, it’s the one I have the most of, and 1990 was a big year in football.
I started by doing some digging online. Found a few sites that list card prices, some say “graded” some say “ungraded” – which I assume means professionally assessed for condition or not, and I’m pretty sure mine are all ungraded.
It seems like there’s a ton of variation in this set. Series 1 has 377 cards, Series 2 has 392, and there’s even a “Final Update” with 32 more. And get this, apparently, there are different versions of a lot of the cards because they would fix errors on the fly during printing. It’s like a treasure hunt within a treasure hunt!
- First: I sorted through all my Series 2 cards. Took me a while, but it was kind of fun.
- Second: I made a list of every card I had, noting any duplicates.
- Third: I compared my list to some of the price guides I found.
Most of my cards aren’t worth much, maybe a few cents each. But there are a few that seem to be worth a couple of dollars, even in their ungraded state. I saw a few sales of common cards online going for $20-35, which isn’t too shabby. I have a few duplicate ones. Maybe I can sell those online.
A Little Company History
So, I got a bit sidetracked researching Pro Set, the company that made these cards. Apparently, they went bankrupt in 1994. They owed a bunch of money to the NFL Players Association. Their cards were known for having action shots and featuring actual rookies, which was cool.
This whole thing has been a fun trip down memory lane. I’m not going to get rich off these cards, but it’s cool to see that a few of them have held some value. It might be time to dig out the rest of my collection and see what other treasures I can find!
