Okay, so I’ve always been a huge golf fan, right? But I realized I didn’t really know the ins and outs of the big tournaments. I mean, I knew they were important, but not why. So, I decided to do a little digging into the four majors in golf.
First off, I had to figure out which tournaments were actually considered the “majors”. Turns out, it’s The Masters, The U.S. Open, The Open Championship (which a lot of people just call the British Open), and the PGA Championship.
I started by reading a bunch of stuff online, you know, the usual – Wikipedia, some sports news sites. The amount of information was a bit much, honestly. But I kept at it.
- The Masters: This one is always at Augusta National Golf Club. It’s super exclusive. I found out that they invite players based on all sorts of things like past champions, top finishers in other big tournaments, and the top players in the world rankings. This is the one famous for the green jacket.
- The U.S. Open: This one moves around to different courses each year, which I thought was pretty cool. The USGA runs it, and they’re known for setting up the courses to be super tough. Like, ridiculously hard. Apparently, it’s a real test of a golfer’s skill.
- The Open Championship: This is the oldest one, which is wild. It started way back in the 1800s. They play it on links courses in the UK, which are these coastal courses with all sorts of, like, bumpy fairways and crazy wind. It’s meant to be played close to the ground.
- The PGA Championship: This one’s run by the PGA of America. Used to be the last major of the year, but now it’s in May. It’s also known for being a real challenge, but maybe not quite as brutal as the U.S. Open. They also try to make sure the best players in the world are playing.
After reading a ton, I started watching some old highlights from each tournament. Seeing the courses, the crowds, and the players battling it out made it all make a lot more sense. I even started to recognize some of the famous holes and shots.
Finally, I decided to write it all down, just to help me remember everything. That’s pretty much this blog post you’re reading now.
So yeah, that’s my journey into learning about the four majors. It was a bit of a process, but now I feel like I have a much better understanding of what makes these tournaments so special. Maybe now I can finally keep up with the conversations at the golf club.
