Okay, so I was watching a baseball game the other day, and it got me thinking about team mascots. Specifically, I got curious about the Atlanta Braves’ mascot. I mean, what even is it? I couldn’t quite figure it out, so I decided to do a little digging.
What I found out about the Braves’ mascot
First, I went straight to the source and checked out the official MLB website. They had a whole section about team mascots, which was pretty cool. But when I got to the Braves, it was a bit confusing. Turns out, they don’t really have an official mascot like some other teams do.
It wasn’t always like this. Back in the day, the Braves had a mascot named Chief Noc-A-Homa. He was, well, a Native American character. I guess it made sense with the team’s name, but times are changing, you know? They retired him way back in 1986.
Then there was Homer of the Brave, who was around from the 80s until 2023, and was kind of like a giant baseball with arms and legs. But he’s gone now, too.
So, I kept digging. I went through some fan forums and blogs, and people were talking about all sorts of unofficial mascots. Some folks mentioned the “Screaming Warrior” logo, which is kind of a fierce-looking Native American profile. But that’s just a logo, not a mascot that runs around the field.
I also learned about these things called “The Heavy Hitters”. These were three guys dressed up in these weird, colorful, kind of muscular costumes. They looked more like superheroes than baseball mascots. They would apparently come out and do skits and stuff during games. Not quite a mascot, but more like a home game entertainment thing.
- The official MLB website doesn’t list a mascot.
- Former mascots included Chief Noc-A-Homa and Homer of the Brave.
- Fan forums suggest unofficial mascots like the “Screaming Warrior” logo.
- “The Heavy Hitters” are a mascot-like group that does entertainment at games.
- There are also other entertainers such as the “Tomahawk Team”.
Then there is the “Tomahawk Team”, another group that pumps up the crowd, but again, not mascots, more like cheerleaders.
So, basically, the Braves don’t have a mascot. They have some entertainment acts, a history of mascots, and some logos that fans identify with, but no single character that represents the team today. It’s kind of unusual, but I guess it’s just the way they do things. That is what I found. I might do a bit more digging later, but for now, that’s the deal with the Braves’ mascot situation. Or lack thereof.
