Okay, so I decided to dive into the world of Commander preconstructed decks, and I picked up the Urza, Lord Protector deck. Here’s how it went down, from start to finish.

Getting Started
First things first, I grabbed the deck online. It arrived, and I was immediately hit with that new card smell. You know the one. I spent a good few minutes just sleeving everything up – gotta protect those cards, right? Especially the foil Urza, he’s pretty sweet.
Breaking it Down
Next, I laid everything out on my table. It’s always a bit overwhelming with these precons, because you’ve got a hundred cards staring back at you. I started by separating the lands from the spells. Then I grouped the spells by type: creatures, artifacts, instants, sorceries, and enchantments. It helped me get a sense of what the deck was trying to do.
The Game Plan
After looking at the cards, it became pretty clear: this deck is all about artifacts and generating a ton of mana. Urza himself reduces the cost of artifacts, instants, and sorceries. There are a bunch of mana rocks and creatures that tap for mana. The deck’s all about the value.
First Few Games
I took the deck for a spin with some friends. The first game was a bit clunky. I got mana screwed early on and couldn’t really do much. It happens.
But the thing is, I could still see the engine begining to form.
The second game, though? That was a different story. I managed to get Urza out early, and then I started churning out artifacts like crazy. My mana ramped up super fast, and I was able to cast some of the bigger spells in the deck, like some big creatures.
Making Changes
The precon is solid, but it’s not perfect. After a few games, I decided to make some tweaks.

- I added a few more counterspells, because this deck can be a bit slow, and I needed ways to protect myself in the early game.
- I also swapped out some of the less impactful artifacts for some that have more immediate effects.
- I added some card draw.
The Final Result (For Now!)
After making those changes, the deck felt much smoother. It’s still not a super competitive deck, but it’s a lot of fun to play. I can generate a ton of value, and I’m always doing something. It’s a great deck to pull out when I want a more relaxed, battlecruiser-style game. Plus, playing all those artifacts just feels good. It’s like building a giant, whirring machine on the table.
So yeah, that’s my Urza precon journey. It’s been a blast, and I’m definitely going to keep tinkering with it. If anyone got any suggestions what I could add or change, let me know! I’m always looking for input.
