Okay, so I was messing around with some golf stats the other day, and this question popped into my head: “How many total pars were made in the 2022 Masters?” I mean, it sounds simple enough, right? Turns out, it’s a bit of a rabbit hole, but a fun one!
Digging for Data
First, I hit up the usual spots – the official Masters website, ESPN, you know the drill. I figured they’d have some overall tournament stats just laying around. Nope. Plenty of individual player stats, leaderboards, scores for each round… but nothing that just gave me the total number of pars.
So, I started thinking, “Okay, I gotta get my hands dirty.” I knew I could find individual player scorecards, so I figured I could go through each one, count the pars for each player, and then add them all up. Sounds tedious? It totally was.
The Manual Grind
I started with the first player on the leaderboard and worked my way down. The Masters website does have detailed scorecards, which was a lifesaver. For each player, I went through each round, counting up the number of times they scored a par. It was a slow, methodical process. You know the human brain. Prone to errors. So I double-checked, triple-checked, my counts.
- Step 1: Open a player’s scorecard.
- Step 2: Go through Round 1, counting pars.
- Step 3: Repeat for Rounds 2, 3, and 4 (if they made the cut).
- Step 4: Write down the total pars for that player.
- Step 5: Repeat for every player.
I kept a running tally in a simple text document. Just player name, total pars. Nothing fancy. After what felt like forever(actually, I spent two whole evenings), I finally had a list of every player who played and how many pars they made.
Adding it All Up
The final step was the easiest – just adding all those individual player totals together. I just used my computer’s calculator, plugging in each number and hitting the “+” button. I even did it a couple of times to make sure I didn’t fat-finger anything.
Eventually, I arrived at the total pars of masters 2022.
