Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my putting lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a rollercoaster. One day I’m draining everything, the next I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. I started thinking, maybe it’s the grip? I’d been using a standard, pretty thin grip forever, and I wondered if a thicker one might help me quiet my hands a bit.

So, I did what any self-respecting golfer does – I went down the rabbit hole of online research. I kept seeing this term “fatso putter grip” pop up. Apparently, these things are like holding a baseball bat, super thick and designed to take your wrists out of the equation.
The Experiment Begins
I decided to give it a shot. Picked up a used putter for cheap that already had a fatso grip on it. I figured, worst case, I’m out a few bucks and I can just chalk it up to experience. I wanted to see if it really made the difference people were claiming.
First Impressions
First time I held it, I’ll be honest, it felt weird. Like, ridiculously oversized. My initial thought was, “How the heck am I supposed to control this thing?” But I committed. Took it to the practice green, and started rolling some putts.
Practice, Practice, Practice
- First 10 minutes: Total disaster. Felt like I had zero control. Everything was either way left or way right.
- Next 30 minutes: Started to get a feel for it. I realized I had to use my bigger muscles, my shoulders, more than my hands. It was forcing me to do that.
- After an hour: Okay, I’m starting to see something here. My stroke felt smoother, more pendulum-like. I wasn’t “yipping” the putts nearly as much.
The Results (So Far)
I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now, and I’m definitely seeing an improvement. I’m not saying I’m suddenly a putting god, but I’m more consistent. My distance control is better, and I’m definitely making more of those short, pressure putts. Those three-footers that used to make me sweat? They’re going in more often. It forced a more stable stroke. I feel I can repeat the stroke more efficiently now.
It’s not a magic bullet, and it definitely takes some getting used to. But if you’re someone who struggles with being too “handsy” with your putting stroke, a fatso grip might be worth exploring. Just be prepared for that initial “whoa, this is huge” feeling! Also, keep in mind that it added quite a bit of weight to the putter head, that made me adjust a little.
I might try adding some tape later, or maybe not?
