Alright, so I’ve gotten into collecting signed baseballs lately, specifically ones from the Houston Astros. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell you! I started small, just thinking it’d be cool to have a couple, but it quickly turned into a bit of an obsession.
First, I scoured the internet. I mean, I really dug deep. I looked at every auction site, every sports memorabilia forum, every online store I could find. There is a lot of stuff out there, good and bad. I was learning the in’s and out’s of spotting what was real, what was a good deal, what was way over priced.
Then, I actually went to some games. Nothing beats getting a ball signed in person! It is also a good way to meet other collectors. I started to understand the game much better too!
The Hard Part (Authentication)
The biggest thing I learned early on is authentication. You can’t just trust any signature you see. There are a ton of fakes. You need to make sure it’s been verified by one of the big authentication companies.
I spent hours, seriously, hours, comparing signatures, reading about what to look for, and trying to figure out which authenticators were the most reputable. It’s a whole world in itself!
My First Few Wins
- My first big score was a ball signed by a player, that I got at a game. I managed to snag it after waiting around after a win. It’s not my favorite player, but it’s still a really cool reminder of that game.
- Then, I took a gamble on an online auction. I was nervous, but I did my homework, checked the authentication, and ended up with a pretty sweet deal on a signed ball.
It’s a slow process, building up a collection. It takes time, patience, and you definitely have to be careful with your money. But when you finally get that ball you’ve been hunting for, man, it’s a great feeling!
I’ve still got a long way to go. I’m learning more every day, making some mistakes, and celebrating the little victories. But that’s part of the fun, right? It’s like a treasure hunt, and I’m hooked!
