Okay, so I’ve been wanting to really dig into some tennis match data, and the Taro Daniel vs. Tsitsipas match seemed like a perfect one to analyze. I’m no expert, but I wanted to see if I could pull some insights from the stats.

Getting Started
First things first, I needed to find the match data. I poked around a few sports websites, and most had some basic stats but getting it in a usable format wasn’t as easy, and they had some basic stats like ace counts, double faults, and win percentages.
After some searching, I finally Got some more detailed data. This was more like it! Point-by-point data, serve speeds, return depths – the good stuff.
Diving into the Data
So, with my data, I started playing around. Here’s what I was curious about:
- Serving Patterns: Where were they aiming their serves? Was Tsitsipas going for power, or was Daniel mixing it up more? I wanted to see if I could find any tendencies.
- Return Effectiveness: Who was winning more points on their return? Was one player better at attacking second serves? I figured this would be a big factor.
- Rally Length: Were the points short and sweet, or were they grinding it out? I was curious to see how the match flowed.
- Key Moments: I looked at Break Point, I wanted to see How they perform at that monment.
What I Found (So Far)
Honestly, it’s been a bit of a learning process. I had a few issues with the formatting of data.
I’m still crunching the numbers, but I’ve already noticed a few interesting things:
- Tsitsipas’s serve is a HUGE weapon. No surprise there, but the numbers really show it. He was hitting a lot of aces and winning a high percentage of his first serve points.
- Daniel was actually pretty good at getting the return in play, even on Tsitsipas’s big serves. He wasn’t winning the points as often, but he was making Tsitsipas work.
- The rallies were a mix. Some were quick serve-and-volley points, others were longer baseline battles. It seemed like Tsitsipas was trying to keep the points shorter, while Daniel was more willing to grind.
Still Working On It
I’m planning to do some more analysis. I want to look at things like:
- How each player performed on different court surfaces (if I can get that data).
- Whether there were any shifts in momentum during the match.
- How their performance changed in tiebreaks or crucial games.
It’s been a fun project so far! It’s definitely making me appreciate the game even more, and it’s cool to see how much you can learn from just digging into the numbers. I’ll keep you posted on what else I find!
