Okay, so the other day I was trying to figure out who was gonna be starting for South Alabama’s football team this season. It’s always a bit of a guessing game, right? So, I decided to dig in and make my own depth chart. Here’s how it all went down:

First Steps: Gathering Intel
First thing I did was hit up the usual spots – you know, the official team website, some fan forums, and a couple of sports news sites. I was basically just trying to get a feel for who was returning, who the new recruits were, and if there were any buzz about position battles.
Building the Foundation: The Obvious Starters
Next, I started a simple list. I put down the names of the guys who were pretty much guaranteed to start. You know, the star quarterback, the leading receiver from last year, the big-name defenders. Those were the easy ones.
The Tricky Part: Filling in the Gaps
This is where it got a little tougher. I had to start reading between the lines of those articles and forum posts. I looked for clues like:
- Coach speak: What were the coaches saying in interviews? Any hints about who was impressing them in practice?
- Spring game reports: Who got the most snaps with the first team during the spring game?
- Recruiting rankings: Were there any highly-rated freshmen who might push for playing time right away?
Making Educated Guesses: The Depth Chart Takes Shape
Based on all that info, I started filling in the rest of the slots. Some positions were tougher than others. For example, if there was a close battle at, say, linebacker, I’d list both guys with an “OR” between their names, like “Player A OR Player B.”
Constant Updates: It’s Never Really Finished
I realized pretty quickly that this depth chart thing is a living document. It’s gonna change throughout the season. Players get injured, some guys step up, others fall behind. So, I’ve been keeping my notes handy and updating my list whenever I see new info.
It was not about perfect, and more like a fun puzzle for me. And it’s kinda cool to have my own little cheat sheet when I’m watching the games. Go Jags!
