Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “alabama memes” all over the internet, and I honestly didn’t get it at first. I mean, I knew it was supposed to be about, like, that kind of stuff, but the jokes just weren’t landing. So, I decided to dive in and figure out what the deal was.

First, I googled “alabama memes explained.” It’s sounds a little silly I know, but I really didn’t get it. This brought up a bunch of Reddit threads and Know Your Meme pages. I started reading through them, trying to piece together the history and the different types of jokes.
It was like, learning the vocabulary of the memes first. Seeing that the memes are jokes about the negative stereotypes of Alabama, mostly about relationships.
Next, I looked at a ton of examples. I just scrolled through image searches and meme dumps. The ones that were really popular. Some of them were just, like, text posts, but others were images. Like, the ones with the family trees that are just a straight line. Those started to make me chuckle a little bit.
I started to see the patterns. It’s all about playing on these exaggerated stereotypes, right? The more over-the-top, the funnier it’s supposed to be. I think the shock value is a big part of it.
I even tried making a few of my own. Nothing fancy, just some simple text-based ones. Like:”When your family reunion is also your dating pool.” Or, “Alabama: Where ‘Sweet Home’ is also your family motto.” I’m not sure if I was doing them right.
- Step 1: Understand the basic stereotype.
- Step 2: Look at examples. Lots of them.
- Step 3: Identify the common formats and joke structures.
- Step 4: Try to create some, even if they’re bad.
I showed my memes to a friend that lives in Alabama, and I think I will keep my relationship with this friend.
I guess I kind of get the “alabama memes” thing now. I’m not sure I’m a huge fan, but at least I’m not completely lost when I see them online anymore.
