Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at crosswords, and it’s a real struggle. Today’s was a mess, something about “referees decisions” – I figured it would all be sports terms, right?

I started out, like, super confident. Grabbed my pen, you know, ready to conquer. First few clues? Nothing. Blank spaces stared back at me. I tried to think of every sports call I could – foul, penalty, strike, touchdown… I wrote a few easy ones in the smaller grids to get the ball rolling, and I even got the first longer word.
Then, the trouble started.
I got stuck on, the clue was something vague, and all I could think of were, like, official rulings. Turns out, it wants something related with referees, I feel so stupid.
So, I moved on. Tried another section. Nope. Another one. Still nothing. I started to feel that familiar crossword frustration creeping in. You know the feeling, you have tried every related word and end up feeling like I am wasting time here.
- Tried skipping around, hoping to find easier clues.
- Looked up a couple of words, felt a little guilty about it.
- Even asked my roommate for help (he’s a sports fanatic) – he just laughed.
Eventually, after what felt like forever, I started to make some progress. A few words clicked into place, and suddenly, I had a couple of crossing letters. This gave me a little more confidence. That helped me figure out the another one. It was like a chain reaction!
The Finish Line (Almost)
I wouldn’t say I finished it, not really. There are still a few empty boxes staring at me, mocking me. But I got way further than I thought I would. I definitely learned some new words, even if I had to cheat a little (don’t tell anyone)..
Next time, maybe I’ll start with a smaller crossword. Or maybe I’ll just stick to Sudoku. We’ll see. But I’m not giving up. I feel like I will get it one day. This crossword thing is a marathon, not a sprint, right?
