Alright, so I got this idea buzzing in my head the other day. Been watching a lot of old NBA games, you know, the classics. And it hit me how many great nicknames these players have, or had. Like, proper unique ones, not just initials and numbers. Thought it might be fun to throw together a little quiz, test out folks’ knowledge. Nothing too serious, just something to do.

Getting Started – The Nickname Hunt
First thing was grabbing the names. Seemed easy enough, right? Just look ’em up. Well, sorta. I started just listing players I could think of off the top of my head and their nicknames. Magic, Bird, MJ, Shaq… the obvious ones. Then I started digging a bit deeper online. And man, you find out some guys had like three or four nicknames over their career! Or nicknames only hardcore fans would know.
Had to make some choices. Decided to stick with the most famous nickname for each player. The one most people would probably recognize. Didn’t want to make it impossible, just a fun challenge. So, I spent a good hour or so just compiling a list. Player name on one side, main nickname on the other. Ended up with a decent list, maybe 30 or 40 players? Good enough to start.
- Found player names
- Found their nicknames (sometimes too many!)
- Picked the most well-known nickname
- Made a simple list
Putting the Quiz Together
Next up, how to actually make the quiz? I thought about those fancy online quiz builders. Looked at a couple. But honestly, they seemed like overkill. Sign up here, choose a template there, maybe pay for features… nah. Too much fuss for a simple idea.
So, I went old school. Just opened up a basic text document. Decided multiple choice was the way to go. Easier to answer, easier to check. For each nickname, I’d write the question, like “Which player was known as ‘The Dream’?” Then I’d put the right answer (Hakeem Olajuwon, obviously) and three wrong answers. Had to make the wrong answers believable, though. Usually other players from the same era or position. Makes it trickier.
Here’s kinda how I structured each question:
Question: Nickname
- A) Wrong Player 1
- B) Correct Player
- C) Wrong Player 2
- D) Wrong Player 3
Did this for all the names on my list. Took a bit of time thinking up good wrong answers. Didn’t want them to be too obvious.
Testing and Tweaking
Once I had the questions drafted, I needed to see if it actually worked. Called up my cousin, he’s a big basketball nut. Read the questions out to him over the phone. He got most of them, but stumbled on a couple. Said one nickname was maybe a bit too old-school, another one he’d just never heard (might’ve been one I thought was more common than it was).

Good feedback, though. Went back to my list. Swapped out a couple of the more obscure ones for slightly more current or universally known players/nicknames. Didn’t want it to be just for people who watched ball in the 90s. Also double-checked my answers and the spelling of names. Easy to mess that up.
Final Thoughts
So yeah, that’s pretty much it. Got a decent little NBA nickname quiz now, just sitting in a text file. Maybe I’ll eventually put it onto a simple webpage or something, make it interactive. But for now, it works fine just reading it out. It was a fun little project for an afternoon. Kept me busy, and let me wallow in some basketball history. Simple stuff, but satisfying when you make something yourself, you know?
