So, the other day, I found myself thinking about baseball caps. Specifically, Mets and Yankees hats. Living around here, you see them everywhere, right? It’s like part of the uniform of the city. For the longest time, I didn’t really wear baseball caps much, but lately, I’ve been wanting something simple for sunny days or just bad hair days, you know?

The thing is, choosing between a Mets hat and a Yankees hat feels like… a statement. It’s not just grabbing any old hat off the shelf. People notice. People have opinions. Big opinions. I don’t follow baseball religiously, not anymore at least, but I grew up with family members on both sides of the fence. Arguments during the Subway Series were practically a holiday tradition.
Going Down the Rabbit Hole
I started actually looking into getting one. First, I just browsed online. Man, the options! It wasn’t just blue or pinstripe. There were:
- Different colors (black-on-black, camo, you name it)
- Fitted vs. Snapback vs. Dad hat styles
- Old logos, new logos, special editions
It got kinda overwhelming, honestly. I initially leaned towards the Yankees cap – it’s classic, that NY logo is recognized worldwide. Simple, clean. But then I thought about the Mets. There’s something appealing about rooting for the underdog sometimes, and the blue and orange is pretty sharp too. Plus, Shea Stadium (yeah, I know it’s Citi Field now, old habits) holds some memories.
I actually went to a store, one of those big sports apparel places. Picked up a Yankees hat. Looked in the mirror. Felt… okay. Then I picked up a Mets hat. Looked again. Felt pretty much the same. It’s just a hat, right? But the weight of that rivalry, even for a casual observer like me, felt weirdly heavy.
The Final Decision (or lack thereof)
So, what did I end up doing? After all that back and forth, turning hats over in my hands, thinking about family arguments and what strangers on the subway might think? Nothing. Yep, walked out empty-handed.
It felt silly to stress so much about it. Maybe I was overthinking the whole “statement” thing. For now, I’m sticking to my plain, no-logo cap. It does the job. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll just grab one without thinking twice. Or maybe I’ll get one of each and wear them on alternate days just to mess with people. Yeah, maybe that’s the way.
