Okay, so I started digging into Marvin Mims for the 2024 fantasy season. Felt like someone worth revisiting after his rookie year.

First thing I did, obviously, was pull up his 2023 stats. Gotta see what he actually did on the field. Looked like he played in 16 games, which is good. But the usage, well, that was kinda spotty. Let’s see… 22 catches on 33 targets, 377 yards, and just one touchdown. Not exactly setting the world on fire for fantasy purposes. But then I remembered, okay, rookie year, weird QB situation with Russ Wilson then Jarrett Stidham later on. Plus, Sean Payton’s offense.
I recalled watching some Broncos games last year. Mims definitely flashed that speed, right? Had some big plays, long catches. He was also involved in the return game quite a bit, which doesn’t help much in standard fantasy leagues but shows his explosiveness.
Checking the 2024 Situation
So, the next step was thinking about what’s different this year. That’s the key part.
- QB Change: This is the big one. Russ is out. They drafted Bo Nix in the first round. Stidham is still around, Zach Wilson too somehow. My gut feeling is Nix is gonna be the guy sooner rather than later. How does Nix fit with Mims? Nix was known for accuracy and getting the ball out quick at Oregon. Mims was mostly used as a deep threat last year. Will Payton ask Mims to run different routes? Or will Nix uncork it more than people think? That’s a big question mark for me.
- WR Room Shakeup: Jerry Jeudy got traded. That’s huge news for target competition. Sutton is still there, the clear number one when he’s healthy and happy. But Jeudy leaving opens up a significant chunk of targets. Tim Patrick is trying to come back from another injury, gotta see if he’s even the same player. They signed Josh Reynolds, who is decent but not a world-beater. So, theoretically, Mims has a clearer path to snaps and targets.
- Payton’s System: Second year under Sean Payton. Usually, you expect players to grasp the system better. Payton likes to use guys in specific roles. Mims’ role last year seemed limited to deep shots and gadget plays. Does Payton see him as more than that? Can Mims earn trust and run more intermediate routes? That’s what he needs to do to get consistent volume.
My Takeaway Process
Okay, putting it all together. I see the Jeudy trade as a clear positive. Fewer mouths to feed. I see the potential for Mims to earn a bigger role because of his talent. He’s got speed you can’t teach.
But, I’m also cautious. Rookie QBs are often shaky, even first-rounders. We don’t know how Nix will distribute the ball. Sutton is still the main guy, and if Tim Patrick is healthy, he’ll command targets too. Josh Reynolds will be involved. Can Mims climb that ladder? He really didn’t command targets as a rookie. Was that just the situation, or is he not quite there yet as a route runner?
So, where does that leave me for fantasy in 2024? I’m thinking Mims is a classic late-round flyer. High ceiling, very low floor. The kind of guy you take a chance on at the end of your draft hoping he hits big. If he can expand his route tree and build chemistry with Nix, and maybe if Sutton or Patrick miss time, he could smash his ADP. But he could also just be a frustrating, boom-or-bust WR4/5 who you never feel comfortable starting.
My plan is to monitor camp reports closely. See how he’s being used, who he’s running with, what the coaches are saying. If the buzz is positive about him taking on a bigger role, I’ll be more willing to bump him up my board slightly. But for now, he’s filed under “intriguing upside pick” rather than someone I’m actively targeting in middle rounds. Need to see more first.
