Alright, so fantasy football season rolled around again, like it always does. Needed a new team name. This year, for whatever reason, I got this idea stuck in my head – wanted something patriotic. Don’t know why, just felt like it.

So, I sat down, cracked open a drink, and started thinking. My first few ideas were pretty weak, gotta admit. Stuff like “USA Football Crew” or “Team Red White Blue”. Blah. Too generic, no punch to it.
I realized I needed a better system than just staring at the ceiling. Started thinking about how these names usually work. Puns, right? Lots of puns. And mixing player names with other stuff.
Getting Down to Business
Okay, so my approach became:
- Grab some patriotic words or phrases.
- Grab some football terms or player names.
- Mash ’em together and see what sticks.
I started jotting down words. Stuff like: Stars, Stripes, Liberty, Patriot, Eagle, Freedom, America, Yankee, Glory, Brave, Uncle Sam… you get the picture. Just a brain dump.
Then I thought about football stuff. Touchdown, Blitz, Sack, QB, RB, Defense, Bombers, Rush, Gridiron. And obviously, player names. This is where it gets tricky because rosters change, but you can use big stars.
Trying Stuff Out
Started combining. “Liberty Bell Cowboys”? Nah. “Stars and Stripes & Sacks”? A little clunky. “Freedom Fields”? Getting closer maybe.
Then I tried player puns. This felt more promising. Let’s see… if I had Patrick Mahomes… “Mahomes of the Brave”? Kinda works. Dak Prescott? “Dak Bless America”? Maybe a bit cheesy, but it’s fantasy football, right?
I spent a good while just mixing and matching. Some were instant rejects. “Uncle Sam’s Defenders”? Sounds like an insurance company. “Yankee Doodle Dalvin Cook”? Too long.

You really just gotta say them out loud. See how they feel. Does it sound cool? Is it easy to remember? Is it maybe too clever and nobody gets it?
The Shortlist
After messing around for probably longer than I should have, I had a few I didn’t hate:
- Fort Knox Defense (Solid, implies tough D)
- The Patriot Games (Movie reference, fits the theme)
- Red, White, and Touchdowns (Simple, clear)
- American Football Team (A bit meta, but hey)
- Stars & Bijan (If I had Bijan Robinson, specific player puns are often best)
- Yankee Doodle Dandies (Classic, maybe a little old school)
Ended up going with one from that list. Felt pretty good about it. It wasn’t rocket science, just took a bit of messing around, trying different angles until something clicked. It’s just a name, but hey, it’s part of the fun.
