Okay, so I tackled the NYT crossword today. The theme seemed to be about clouds, which sounded pretty straightforward at first. Let’s walk through how it went down.

Getting Started
First things first, I grabbed my usual cup of coffee and settled in. I always start by scanning the clues, looking for the low-hanging fruit. You know, the fill-in-the-blanks, the super common short words. Today was no different. I bounced between Across and Down clues, trying to get a foothold.
- Nabbed things like ERA and ATE pretty quickly.
- Some easy proper nouns also fell into place early on.
Got a few spots filled in here and there, mostly around the edges. The middle section looked a bit daunting right from the start.
Figuring Out the Theme
The theme clues started popping up. Honestly, I didn’t immediately see the connection. One clue might hint at a type of cloud, another might use ‘cloud’ in a phrase. It wasn’t just listing cloud types, which made it a bit more interesting, I guess.
I remember getting stuck on one long answer. I had a few letters, like C _ _ U _ _ S. Took me a while, but eventually, CUMULUS clicked. That helped a lot. Once I got one or two of the main theme answers, the others started making more sense. It’s like a code; crack one part, and the rest becomes clearer. Sometimes you just gotta trust the crosses and see what shapes up.
Working Through the Grid
I usually work section by section once I have a few anchor points. The top left corner filled up relatively smoothly after I got a couple of longer Down answers sorted. Then I moved over to the right.
The middle-bottom section, though? That was tough. There were a couple of words crossing that I just couldn’t see. I had to leave it blank for a bit and hope that filling in surrounding stuff would give me more letters to work with. It often does. You stare at blanks, then fill something else in miles away, and suddenly you see the answer back in the tricky spot.
Moments of Being Stuck
Oh yeah, definitely got stuck. There was this one clue, I think it was for a five-letter word, and I was convinced it was one thing, but the cross-clue just wouldn’t work. Had to erase it completely and rethink. That happens all the time. You get locked into an answer, and it blocks you from seeing the real one.
Sometimes I just put the puzzle down for five minutes. Walk away, get some water. When I come back, I often spot something obvious I was missing before. Fresh eyes, you know?

Finishing Up
Eventually, through sheer stubbornness and revisiting those tricky crosses, the grid started looking complete. The last few squares are always the most satisfying. I think the final letter went into that tough middle-bottom section I mentioned earlier. Double-checked a few of the weirder spellings based on the clues.
And bam, done. Felt good. It wasn’t the hardest puzzle ever, but the cloud theme was woven in nicely without being too obvious. A decent mental workout for the morning.
So that was my little crossword adventure today. Always fun to exercise the old brain cells a bit. Until the next one!
