Okay, so I had this idea buzzing around in my head the other day. A crossword puzzle, you know? But specifically themed around hair colors. Seemed like a fun little project to try out, something different.

First off, I needed the words. The hair colors themselves. I just started listing everything I could think of. The obvious ones came first:
- Blonde
- Brunette
- Black
- Red
Then I pushed myself a bit. Thinking about variations, shades… stuff like auburn, ginger, platinum, ash blonde, even jet black and strawberry blonde. I ended up with a decent list to work with.
Putting it Together
Next up was actually making the grid. This part? A bit fiddly. I started sketching on some graph paper. Just trying to see how the words could interlock. You know how it is, trying to fit a long word like ‘strawberry blonde’ next to shorter ones. It took a few attempts, lots of erasing and head-scratching. Some arrangements just didn’t work, leaving awkward empty spaces or making it impossible to fit other words.
Once I had a grid layout that looked promising – where the words crossed over nicely – I numbered the starting squares for the across and down words. Felt like progress!
Writing the Clues
With the grid sorted, I needed clues for each color. I didn’t want them to be too easy, like just saying “A common dark hair color”. Where’s the fun in that? So I tried to be a little creative. For platinum, maybe something like “A very light, almost white blonde”. For auburn, perhaps “A reddish-brown shade”. I tried to vary them, some more direct, some needing a bit more thought. You know, kinda like how those newspaper puzzles get trickier as the week goes on.
The Test Run
Before calling it done, I filled it out myself. Just to catch any silly mistakes – wrong numbers, misspelled words, clues that made no sense even to me. Seemed okay. Then I printed a clean copy and gave it to my partner to try, without giving any hints. Watched them chew on their pencil for a bit. They got most of them but stumbled on one or two clues I’d thought were clever, but were maybe just confusing. So, I tweaked those couple of clues to be a bit clearer based on that feedback.
And that was pretty much it. Got myself a finished hair color crossword. It took a bit more effort than I initially thought, especially getting the grid right, but it was a satisfying little exercise. Fun to see an idea go from just a thought to something real you can actually do.
