Alright, buckle up folks, because I’m about to spill the beans on my experience following the Scottish Senior Open 2024. It was a wild ride, let me tell you!

So, it all started when I saw that the Senior Open was heading back to Sunningdale – hadn’t been there since 2021, apparently. I thought, “Right, this is my chance to actually see some decent golf and maybe even learn a thing or two.” I mean, watching it on the telly is one thing, but being there, feeling the atmosphere? That’s a whole other ball game.
First thing I did was sort out tickets. Went online, wrestled with the website (you know how those things are), and finally managed to snag a couple of day passes. Score! Then came the fun part: figuring out how to get there. Sunningdale isn’t exactly around the corner, so I had a bit of a think. Train seemed the easiest option, avoids the whole parking nightmare.
Next, I had to prep. This wasn’t just a casual stroll in the park. Sun cream? Check. Hat? Check. Comfy shoes? Double check. I learned my lesson years ago about wearing the wrong footwear to these things. And of course, the binoculars. Gotta see those shots up close, right?
The day itself was… well, it was British weather at its finest. Started off sunny, then the clouds rolled in, and then, of course, a bit of drizzle for good measure. But hey, that’s part of the charm, isn’t it? Didn’t dampen my spirits one bit.
Got to the course, and it was buzzing. Loads of people milling about, the smell of burgers sizzling, the sound of golf balls being whacked… pure bliss, if you ask me. I spent the first few hours just wandering around, soaking it all in, watching different players on different holes.
I tried to focus on some of the techniques the pros were using. The way they lined up their shots, their swing mechanics, their putting strategies… It was fascinating to watch and definitely gave me some ideas for my own game (which, let’s be honest, needs all the help it can get).
One thing that really stood out was their composure. Even when they messed up a shot (and they did, even the best of ’em), they didn’t let it get to them. Just took a deep breath, regrouped, and moved on. That’s something I seriously need to work on.
Of course, no trip to a golf tournament is complete without a bit of food and drink. I grabbed a burger and a pint (or two) and just chilled out for a while, watching the world go by. It was perfect.

As the day wore on, I started to feel a bit tired, so I found a good spot near the 18th green and watched some of the players finish their rounds. The atmosphere was electric, especially when there was a close finish.
Walking back to the train station, I was buzzing. It was a fantastic day out, and I learned a ton. I’ve already started trying to incorporate some of what I saw into my own game and i’m eager to hit the course this weekend! Maybe, just maybe, I’ll be able to shave a few strokes off my handicap.
So, yeah, that was my Scottish Senior Open 2024 experience. Would I do it again? Absolutely. In a heartbeat.
