So, I spent some time focusing on Wesley Bryan during the Rocket Mortgage event recently. Wasn’t some grand plan, you know, just something I decided to do. Life gets busy, same old routines, and I figured I’d try watching golf a bit differently for a change. I’d seen bits of Bryan online before, doing those trick shots, seemed like an interesting fella, not your typical robot golfer.

Why Him, Why Then?
Honestly, I was looking at some home stuff, refinancing maybe, and the Rocket Mortgage name kept popping up. Then I saw they sponsor this golf tournament, and they sponsor Bryan. It just clicked, like, okay, let’s follow this guy at this event. A bit random, maybe, but it gave me a focus. Instead of just having the golf on in the background, I decided I’d actively track his progress. My own little project, you could say.
How I Did It
First step was simple: find out when he was playing. Pulled up the tournament schedule, got his tee times. Didn’t want to be glued to the screen all day, just wanted to check in during his rounds. I mostly used my phone and laptop. Kept the leaderboard page open in a browser tab. That was my main tool. Refresh, refresh, refresh. You know how it is.
When I had time, I’d put on the actual TV broadcast or the online stream. You don’t always see every player, especially if they aren’t near the lead. So, it was a mix of things:
- Watching the live leaderboard for his score updates hole by hole.
- Trying to catch his shots when the broadcast showed him.
- Looking at the basic stats if the app showed them – fairways, greens, putts. Simple stuff.
- Listening to the commentators if they mentioned him.
It wasn’t super scientific. More like building a picture of his round from different pieces of information. How’s he doing now? Did he make that putt? Oh, bogey there, wonder what happened.
What I Noticed
Following one specific player like Wesley Bryan definitely changes how you watch. Instead of just caring about the top few names, you get invested in his specific ups and downs. You see a birdie pop up on the tracker, feels like a little win. See a double bogey, and you kinda feel the frustration. It’s a grind. Every shot matters.
Also, you really notice the sponsor stuff more. Rocket Mortgage was plastered everywhere – the hats, the caddie bibs, the signs lining the course. It’s constant. Guess that’s the whole point of the sponsorship money, right? Make sure you see the name.
Bryan played alright during the stretches I watched. Some good shots, some not-so-good ones. That’s golf. But focusing on him made me appreciate the consistency needed out there, even when you’re not having your best day.
Was It Worth It?
Yeah, I’d say so. It was a good little practice in paying attention differently. Made watching the tournament more engaging than just passively having it on. Didn’t turn me into a massive Wesley Bryan expert or anything, but I got a better sense of the flow of a professional round from one player’s perspective. And it definitely cemented the Rocket Mortgage name in my head, for better or worse. So, yeah, an interesting experiment, glad I did it.
