Okay, so the fantasy football season was rolling around again, like it always does. And every year, I find myself scrambling for a decent team name right before the draft clock starts ticking. It’s kind of embarrassing showing up with “Team Smith” again. This time, I figured I’d actually put some thought into it and go for something I enjoy – movies. Decided to mash up my love for films with fantasy football.

First thing I did was just sit down and think about movies. Not even specific names yet, just genres and flicks I actually liked. Pulled out a notepad, started jotting down titles, famous characters, iconic lines. Stuff like The Godfather, Star Wars, maybe some superhero stuff like The Dark Knight, comedies like Anchorman or Step Brothers. Just got a raw list going, didn’t filter anything at this stage.
Next step, I did the same thing but for football. Threw down player names that are popular or have pun potential – you know, guys like Mahomes, Kelce, Jefferson, maybe even some older legends. Also added basic football terms: Touchdown, Interception, Blitz, Gridiron, Pigskin, Fantasy, Draft Day, stuff like that. Again, just a brain dump.
Mixing and Matching
Alright, this is where the actual work started. I looked at my two lists – movies on one side, football on the other – and started trying to smash them together. It was pretty messy at first. Some combinations were just bad, didn’t make sense, or weren’t funny.
I tried matching player names to movie characters. Like, maybe “Mahomes Alone” instead of “Home Alone”? Or “Dude, Where’s My Carr?”. Sometimes I focused on the movie title itself. “A League of Their Own” could become “A League of Mahomes Own”. “The Silence of the Lambs” … maybe “Silence of the Lambeaus”? A bit of a stretch sometimes, gotta admit.
I also played around with famous quotes. “I’ll be back” could turn into something about a player returning from injury, maybe “Allen Be Back” if you have Josh Allen. “Show me the money!” is classic, maybe “Show Me The Mooney!” if you drafted Darnell Mooney. You get the idea. It was a lot of trial and error.
Filtering and Picking
After messing around for a while, I had a long list of possibilities, some good, some terrible. I started crossing off the ones that felt too forced, or ones that only I would get because it was some obscure movie reference. The goal is usually to get a little chuckle from the league mates, right?
I read them out loud. Does it roll off the tongue? Is the pun obvious enough? Is it actually clever or just kind of lame? I even bounced a couple off my brother to see if they landed. Once I had it narrowed down, I just picked the one that felt right for this year’s vibe.
Some Names I Cooked Up
Here are a few examples that came out of my little brainstorming session this time around. Just to give you a feel for what I landed on:

- Forrest Gump -> Forrest Rump, Run Forrest Run
- The Dark Knight -> The Dark Knight Rises, Gotham Knights
- Star Wars -> Dak Prescott Jedi, The Empire Strikes Dak, Judge Jeudy
- Any Given Sunday -> Any Given Sunday
- Saving Private Ryan -> Saving Private Kyler
- Step Brothers -> Catalina Wine Mixer FTW
- Anchorman -> San Diego Super Chargers (if you’re nostalgic), Stay Classy San Diego
- Goodfellas -> The Good Fellas
- Lord of the Rings -> Lord of the Receptions, My Precious
That’s pretty much my process. It’s nothing fancy, just involves actually sitting down and thinking about it for a bit instead of waiting until the last second. Made the whole pre-draft thing a bit more fun, honestly. Hopefully, walking through how I did it gives you some ideas for your own league!
