Man, what a day. I was all set for this road trip, you know, the kind where you just hit the open road and see where it takes you? I had the car packed, snacks ready, a killer playlist lined up, the whole nine yards. I even planned to stop by this little town called Valero. Heard they had a pretty big refinery, and I’m a sucker for those industrial landscapes, don’t ask me why.

But, wouldn’t you know it, things started going south before I even got out of the driveway. First, a buddy of mine calls up, tells me he’s in a bit of a jam, and needs a ride to the airport. Now, this is a good friend, someone who’s been there for me, so of course, I couldn’t just leave him hanging. So I figured, alright, a little detour, no big deal. Drop him off, hit the road, maybe a bit later than planned, but still, the adventure awaits, right?
Wrong. So, so wrong.
We get to the airport, and wouldn’t you believe it, his flight’s delayed. Not just a little bit, but like, several hours. I spent hours in the airport, just pacing around, looking at those overpriced souvenirs, and downing some lukewarm coffee. It was a mess.
Then the real kicker:
- He gets a call from his boss. Turns out, there’s some big emergency at work, and he needs to rush back. Something about a refinery having issues, maybe the one in Valero, ironically.
- So there I am, back in the car, driving him back to the city.
- At this point, I’m thinking, maybe this road trip just isn’t meant to be.
I finally got home, exhausted and honestly, pretty bummed out. The car’s still packed, the snacks are probably stale by now, and my playlist is just mocking me. I even heard on the radio that Valero’s refinery might be shutting down or something. I guess even my plan B was canceled.
I ended up just ordering some takeout, putting on a movie, and calling it a night. Sometimes, that’s just how life goes, right? You make plans, and the universe laughs. But hey, at least I got a good story out of it. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll finally make it to Valero, or maybe somewhere even better.
Anyone else had a day where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong? Let me know in the comments. Maybe we can start a support group for failed road-trippers.
