Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with my putting game lately, right? And I’ve really been focused on this Scottie Scheffler putter thing. Let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but a fun one.
I started off just watching videos, trying to get a feel for what the deal was with Scheffler’s putter. I read somewhere that this guy went from having a weak putting game to it being a strong suit. That got me curious, how a putter change had made him have eight wins in 2024. So I dug around and saw he’s using this “Spider” putter. Apparently, it’s got this great alignment thing going on, makes it easy to line up the shot without needing to mark up your ball or anything.
I got my hands on one of these Spider putters. First time I held it, I could see what he meant about the alignment. It just felt right, you know? Like, the way it’s designed, it just naturally helps you aim better. I spent a couple of days just practicing in my living room, getting a feel for it.
Then, I hit the course. Now, I’m no pro, but I’ve been playing for a while, and I’ve used my fair share of putters. With this one, I started trying out different grips. I saw that Scheffler himself switched it up sometimes, going from a claw grip on shorter putts to a regular grip for longer ones. So, I did the same. Claw grip for the shorties, regular grip for the long ones.
- Short putts: Claw grip all the way. Felt weird at first, but man, the control you get is something else.
- Long putts: Stuck with my usual grip. It just felt more natural for those longer strokes.
Honestly, it took some getting used to. I wasn’t sinking every putt right off the bat. But I could feel the difference. The alignment was definitely easier, and I felt like I had more control over the ball’s direction, especially on those shorter putts. I’ve heard that before 2022 he was using some Scotty Cameron prototype, but I can see why he made the change.
I kept at it, practicing whenever I could. And you know what? It started to pay off. I noticed I was missing less, and my putts were getting closer to the hole, even if they didn’t always go in. It was like, the more I used it, the more comfortable I got, and the better I got.
Now, I’m not saying this putter is magic or anything. It’s not going to turn you into a pro overnight. But for me, it’s definitely made a difference. It’s made me think more about my putting, about my grip, about the way I approach each shot. I even read that Rory McIlroy gave Scheffler some advice on putting. I am not sure what it was, but it worked!
So, if you’re struggling with your putting game or just looking for something new to try, I’d say give the Scottie Scheffler putter method a shot. It might not work for everyone, but who knows, it might just be the thing that helps you take your game to the next level.
