Okay, so I was messing around with this thing called “gee es” the other day, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a trip.

First, I had to get access to this GEE thing, It’s some Google thing, it stands for Google Earth Engine. It’s like a toolbox for mucking about with satellite images and stuff. It can be used in google colab. I followed some diagram I found online, and boom, I was in. Seems like all the data is in something called the “Earth Engine Data Catalog,” I guess that’s where I’ll be digging around.
I opened up Google Earth. I wanted to try this on my hometown. It’s wild, you can draw a box around an area, they call it a “polygon,” and that becomes your “Region of Interest” or ROI. So, I found my city, used the “Add polygon” tool, drew a box around it, and named it “ROI”. Easy peasy.
Then I found out this GEE thing is all about playing with GLMs. I just simply estimated a straightforward GLM. I have no idea what that means, but it was a step.
The whole thing is kinda cool. You can use these tools to look at changes over time, like how a city has grown or how a forest has shrunk. It’s like having a superpower to see the world from above, and it’s all up there in the cloud.
I’m still figuring out all the ins and outs of it, but it’s definitely something I’m gonna keep playing around with. It feels like a whole new world opened up, right there on my computer. There was a lot of images, historical and current. Who knows what I’ll find next?
