I started digging into the San Francisco 49ers playoff history today. I’ve always been a fan, but I never really looked deep into their records. So, I decided to do some digging.
First, I checked out their overall playoff wins. Turns out, the 49ers have won 38 playoff games. That’s the most in NFL history! I was pretty stoked to find that out. They’ve been in the playoffs 30 times, 29 in the NFL, and once in the AAFC. They’ve also been in 19 NFC Championship games, which is also a record. They hosted 11 of those, another NFC record.
Then I got curious about their biggest playoff win. I found this one game, the Buffalo Bills versus Oakland Raiders in the 1991 AFC Championship. Bills won 51-3. That’s a 48-point difference!
I also read that the 49ers were one of the 16 teams that missed the playoffs after losing the previous Super Bowl. It was Super Bowl 58, and they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, 25-22. They had won the NFC title in 2019, but then lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl that year, too.
I saw some chatter about the 49ers not being in the playoff picture for the first time since 2020, which is a bummer. Some people were talking about whether the 49ers can win the Super Bowl this year. They’ve been in seven Super Bowls and won five, so it’s not out of the question.
- Total Playoff Wins: 38 (most in NFL history)
- Playoff Appearances: 30 times (29 NFL, 1 AAFC)
- NFC Championship Games: 19 (most in NFC)
- NFC Championship Games Hosted: 11 (most in NFC)
Here’s a summary of what I found:
It was a pretty interesting deep dive. I knew the 49ers had a rich history, but seeing all these numbers and records really puts it into perspective. They’ve had some ups and downs, for sure, but they’re definitely a team with a strong legacy. Go Niners!
