Alright, so I decided to give this “holier-than-thou crossword” thing a try. I mean, I see people doing crosswords all the time, figured it can’t be that hard, right? Turns out, it’s a bit more tricky than it looks.
So I started by grabbing one of those crossword books from the store. You know, the ones with like a million puzzles in them? Yeah, those. I flipped to a random page, found one that didn’t look too intimidating, and got to work.
First, I read through all the clues, both across and down. Some of them were pretty easy, like “a large body of water” and stuff like that. I scribbled those answers in no problem, feeling pretty good about myself. I thought, “Man, I’m a natural at this!” But then, oh boy, then came the tricky ones.
There was this one clue, “holier-than-thou,” and it had me totally stumped. I racked my brain, trying to think of any word that fit. Nothing. I even tried to cheat a little and look it up online. I found some websites talking about it, saying there are like 30 or 40 possible answers, or even only 26. It’s all a mess, someone even said the answer is “THAN”, which I don’t think makes any sense.
- There were also some who say the answer should be “SMUG”. I tried this word on my crossword.
- Also, I found another answer is “SANCTIMONIOUS”, which is quite a long word.
- Last, someone said the answer can be as short as “HIGH”, but that doesn’t make any sense to me.
After a while, I tried “SMUG” in my crossword, and guess what? It fits! I felt like a genius for a second there. But then I realized that was only one clue, and I still had a ton of blanks staring back at me.
I kept plugging away, trying different words, erasing them when they didn’t work, and slowly but surely, I started to fill in more of the puzzle. It was kind of satisfying, like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, but with words instead of pictures.
Finally, after what felt like hours, I managed to complete the whole thing! I leaned back, looked at my masterpiece, and felt a sense of accomplishment. I may not be a crossword expert, but I did it. And you know what? It was actually kind of fun. Maybe I’ll try another one tomorrow. Or maybe I’ll just stick to easier puzzles for a while. We’ll see.
