Okay, so I was digging around for some cool baseball stats the other day, and I stumbled upon this idea about the Detroit Tigers and their 20-game winners. You know, those pitchers who manage to rack up 20 wins in a single season. It’s a pretty big deal, and I thought it would be fun to see how many times this has happened in Tigers’ history.
First, I headed over to this baseball stats website I usually use. They have like all these game records and everything. I typed in “Detroit Tigers” and started looking at the data. It took me forever to read. I scrolled through season after season, checking out each pitcher’s win total. I must have spent a good couple of hours on this, no joke. I got a bunch of names and dates, but it was all pretty messy.
Then, I decided to organize everything. I opened up a spreadsheet, and started making a list. I put down the pitcher’s name, the year they achieved 20 wins, and any other cool details I could find, like if they won any awards that year. It was kind of a pain to transfer all the data manually, but I finally got it done.
After that, I wanted to see if there were any patterns. Like, were there certain decades with more 20-game winners? I played around with the data a bit, making some simple charts. I color coded them and everything. It was a lot of work, I made many mistakes.
Finally, I had a pretty good overview of the Tigers’ 20-game winners. I learned a few things, which is the point I think. I also cleaned up my spreadsheet a bit, so it looked a bit nicer, I guess. I saved it as a PDF, so it’s easy to share now. It is quite hard and time-consuming, but I made it eventually.
Here’s what I found:
- Denny McLain was the last Tigers pitcher to win over 30 games in a season. He did it back in 1968, which is pretty wild.
- Hal Newhouser was a beast in the 1940s. The dude won 20+ games three times!
- There have been a few dry spells where the Tigers didn’t have any 20-game winners for like, a decade or more.
Anyways, that’s my little deep dive into the Tigers’ 20-game winners. It was way more work than I thought it would be, but hey, I learned something new, and I got a cool spreadsheet out of it. Hope you guys find it interesting!
