Okay, so I wanted to try something a little different today, and it’s all about making my own “mlb belt.” I saw these online, and they looked pretty cool, but I figured, why not try to make one myself?
Getting Started
First, I gathered up all the stuff I thought I’d need. I grabbed a plain leather belt from my closet that I didn’t wear much anymore. Then, I dug out some old baseballs – I had a few lying around from when I used to play catch with my dad. My thought was to use parts of the baseballs to make the belt, so this was an important thing. I also found some tools in the garage: a hammer, a chisel, and some heavy-duty glue.
Taking Things Apart
The first real step was taking apart the baseballs. Man, that was tougher than I expected! I started by trying to cut the seams with a knife, but that didn’t really work, the seams are too strong. So, I switched to the hammer and chisel. I placed the baseball on a sturdy surface and carefully started to hit the seam line of the baseball, the seams started to break down after the first few attempts. I kept hitting the seam line with my hammer and chisel, and eventually, I managed to pry the leather covers off.
Putting It Together
Once I had the leather pieces, I laid them out on the belt to see how they would look, I wanted the iconic red stitching of the baseball to be shown on the belt. I trimmed a few of them to make them fit better and arranged them in a pattern that I liked. Then came the gluing. I carefully applied the glue to the back of each leather piece and pressed them firmly onto the belt. This part was a little messy, and I got some glue on my fingers, but it was all part of the process, right?
Finishing Touches
After the glue dried, I checked to make sure everything was secure. It seemed pretty solid! To add a little extra something, I decided to punch a few extra holes in the belt using a leather punch I borrowed from my neighbor. This way, I could adjust the size a bit more, you know? I also used a leather conditioner to give the whole thing a nice, finished look.
The Final Result
And that’s it! It took a few hours, and it wasn’t perfect, but I ended up with a pretty unique “mlb belt.” It’s definitely a conversation starter, and I’m kind of proud of how it turned out. I’ve been wearing it around, and I’ve already gotten a few compliments. It just goes to show that you can make some pretty cool stuff if you put your mind to it and aren’t afraid to get your hands a little dirty.
- Step 1: Gathered materials – Got the belt, baseballs, and tools.
- Step 2: Dismantled baseballs – Used hammer and chisel to remove leather.
- Step 3: Arranged and glued leather – Laid out the pieces and glued them to the belt.
- Step 4: Added finishing touches – Punched extra holes and conditioned the leather.
Maybe I’ll try making another one sometime, maybe with a different design. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!
