Okay, so I’ve been diving deep into Honkai: Star Rail’s Pure Fiction mode, and let me tell you, figuring out the right team comps has been a journey. I wanted to share what I’ve learned so far, my trial and error, and what’s actually been working for me.

My First Attempts (and Failures)
Initially, I just threw in my strongest characters, thinking that raw power would be enough. I mean, it works in most other game modes, right? Wrong! Pure Fiction is a whole different beast. I quickly realized that it’s not about single-target damage; it’s about hitting everyone, and hitting them hard.
My first few teams were a mess. I had, like, Seele in there, thinking her ultimate would wipe the floor. It did… with one enemy. The rest just laughed and kept coming. It was super frustrating. I spent so much time leveling characters and Light Cones, and here I was, getting stomped.
The Turning Point: AoE is King
After a few embarrassing defeats, I started looking around online, watching videos, and reading guides(but honestly, most were kinda confusing). The big takeaway? Area of Effect (AoE) damage is absolutely essential. You need characters that can hit multiple enemies at once, ideally with every attack.
This is when I started experimenting with characters I had previously ignored. Herta, for example. I always thought she was a bit… underwhelming. But in Pure Fiction? She’s a queen! Her follow-up attacks just shred through waves of enemies. And then, the most important part is, Himeko. Himeko is another queen too! I paired them together!
Building a Functional Team
So, I started building around Herta and Himeko. Here’s the basic structure I’ve been working with:
- Herta & Himeko: The core of the team. Their follow-ups are crucial.
- A Buffer: Someone to boost their attack or damage. I’ve been using Tingyun, and Ruan Mei, but I feel like I need to try other options too.
- A Sustainer/Shielder:Someone to keep everyone alive,I like to choose Fu Xuan. I don’t have her, but I’ve borrowed support units and she seems to work great.
My Current Go-To Teams
I found that after pairing these characters, the basic structure is not a must, and a second damage dealer can be added.
Here’s a team that’s been working pretty well for me:

- Herta
- Himeko
- Ruan Mei
- Fu Xuan(Support)
Also:
- Herta
- Himeko
- Serval
- Lynx
It’s not perfect, but it’s way better than my initial attempts. I’m consistently clearing more stages now, and actually getting some decent scores.
Still Learning and Experimenting
I’m definitely still learning. I’m trying to figure out the best Light Cones and Relics for each character. It’s a lot of min-maxing, and honestly, it can be a bit overwhelming. But it’s also really satisfying when you see your team finally click and just demolish everything.
I’m also keeping an eye on new characters that might be good for Pure Fiction. I have a feeling that as more characters are released, the optimal team comps will change. It’s all about adapting and trying new things!
Anyway, that’s my Pure Fiction journey so far. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there who’s struggling. Just remember: AoE is your friend, and don’t be afraid to experiment! And don’t give up if your first few teams don’t work out. It takes time to figure this mode out!
