Well now, if ya wanna know ’bout Hancock County, ya came to the right place, though I ain’t no scholar, just a simple old woman. Hancock County, down there on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, it’s a place where folks go about their business, and we ain’t too fussed ’bout much. If ya ain’t been there, let me tell ya a bit ’bout it, and maybe you’ll get a feel for what it’s like, just from this ol’ lady’s point of view.
Now, Hancock County sits on the coast of Mississippi, right by the Gulf of Mexico. It’s one of them places where the sea breeze can just take the worries outta your head. Ya got your Bay St. Louis, which is kinda the heart of the county, and it’s got a little bit of everything, like some good folks, a bit of history, and a whole lotta charm. That Bay St. Louis, well, it’s the county seat, they call it that, and if ya need to go do some business or see the board of supervisors, that’s where ya’d go. They’s all sorts of things goin’ on there, like makin’ decisions for the county and whatnot. I reckon if ya needed to find something official, you’d head to the Hancock County Board of Supervisors at 854 Highway 90, Suite A, Bay St. Louis, MS. You can even give ’em a call at 228-467-0172 if you need help, though I reckon most people prefer to talk in person, the old-fashioned way.
And don’t go thinkin’ it’s all work and no play. Hancock County’s got a way of makin’ a livin’ with its businesses too. They got somethin’ called the Ole Miss Coastal Business Growth Accelerator, which I hear helps folks in Hancock and the nearby counties like Harrison, Jackson, and others to grow their businesses. They don’t just talk about it neither, they put their money where their mouth is—$312,000 to be exact, for helpin’ businesses get a good start in the area. I know that might sound like a lotta money, but around here, it could mean a whole lotta help for someone just startin’ out.
But now, we ain’t all about businesses and growth, there’s plenty of stuff that comes with living so close to the Gulf too. I reckon hurricanes are somethin’ we all got a little too familiar with. Over the years, Hancock County’s had its share of ’em, and folks here ain’t the type to sit around wringin’ their hands. They do what they gotta do to bounce back. Take for instance the $2.4 million they got to help protect and fix up the harbor areas that got hit by the hurricanes. It’s a big deal for Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties, all of us down here need to stick together to keep things safe for our future.
Population-wise, well, you ain’t gonna find no big city here, but there’s a good bunch of folks. The county’s population ain’t the biggest, but it’s a mix of all sorts, with different ages and races. The population density, that’s a fancy way of sayin’ how many folks are around in a given area, is higher near the coast and lower the further you go inland. But no matter where ya go in Hancock, you’re bound to meet friendly folks, who know each other by name and ain’t too shy to stop and chat.
Now, I reckon y’all might be wonderin’ about the age of folks here. Well, we got folks from all ages, but a lot of us are a bit older. That means the county has a bit of a laid-back feel, where you ain’t in a rush to go anywhere. Life here is simple, and folks like to take their time, whether it’s in the fields or by the water. The young ones, they mostly go off to college or to work in the bigger cities, but many come back home to visit, and that’s a good thing.
So, if you ever find yourself down that way, don’t just pass through. Take a moment to enjoy what we got here. It’s a good place to slow down and breathe in the salty air. It’s not fancy, but it’s home to many good people who take care of their own. And for me, that’s what makes Hancock County worth talkin’ ’bout.
