Okay, so today I decided to tackle a “legendary figure crossword”. You know, the kind where the clues are all about famous people from history, myths, and pop culture? I’ve always loved crosswords, but I’m definitely more of a wordplay person than a trivia buff, so this was a bit of a challenge.

First, I printed out the crossword. I like the feel of paper and pencil, and it lets me scribble all over the margins. Then I did a quick scan of all the clues, just to get a sense of what I was dealing with. There were some that I knew instantly – easy ones like a four-letter word for a Greek hero, which, obviously is “Zeus”.
Next, I started filling in the answers I was sure of. Getting those initial words down is so satisfying, and it gives you a starting point for the harder * is exciting, and give me a sense of achievement.
Then came the real work. I started tackling the clues that seemed doable, but not immediately obvious. This is where the fun (and sometimes, the frustration) begins. I found myself thinking, “Okay, what’s a seven-letter word for a famous scientist?” And, I get it, the answer is “Newton”.
For the clues I was totally stumped on,I used a paper and wrote down any letter combinations I could think of, and just staring at them until something * did’t work well, so, I gave up some answers temporarily.
Finally, after much thought, I finished the last word! Woo-hoo, what a satisfying ending!
