Okay, so I’ve been getting really into Dragon Ball FighterZ lately. Like, really into it. And, naturally, that means diving deep into the tier lists. I wanted to figure out who the best characters were, not just by reading other people’s opinions, but by actually trying them out myself. So, that’s what I did!

My Experiment Begins
First, I scoured the internet for existing tier lists. I found a bunch, watched a ton of YouTube videos, and read through forum discussions. It was information overload, to be honest! Everyone had different opinions, which was kind of frustrating at first, but also made it more interesting.
I decided I needed a more hands-on approach. So, I booted up the game and started experimenting. I picked a handful of characters that were consistently ranked high on various lists – you know, the usual suspects like GT Goku, Base Vegeta, and Kid Buu. I also grabbed some characters that were considered “low tier” just to see if the difference was really that noticeable.
Practice Mode is My New Best Friend
I spent hours in practice mode. Seriously, hours. I worked on combos, practiced block strings, and tried to get a feel for each character’s movement and special moves. It was a grind, but a fun grind. I started to see why certain characters were considered top-tier – their tools were just so much better! Some characters had crazy mix-up potential, while others had insane damage output. It was eye-opening.
Taking it Online
After feeling somewhat confident in practice mode, I took the plunge and went online. This is where things got real. Practice mode is one thing, but facing actual opponents is a completely different beast. I got my butt kicked… a lot. But I also started to win some matches, and more importantly, I started to understand why I was winning or losing.
- I learned that tier lists aren’t everything. Player skill matters way more.
- I discovered that some “low tier” characters actually felt pretty good in my hands.
- I confirmed that some of the top-tier characters were indeed ridiculously strong.
My Personal (and Very Subjective) Tier List Thoughts
Based on my own playtime, and please take it easy on me because I’m no pro, here’s a general idea of what my brain came up with that I jotted down:
- Top Tier Feels: GT Goku is still amazing. Base Vegeta is really strong. Kid Buu is super annoying (in a good way for the player, I guess, but not for the person playing against them, I noticed).
- Solid Mid-Tier: Found a lot of characters here. Yamcha, Tien, and even some other characters that are not generally listed in top tiers.
- Struggled With: There are some fighters I just couldn’t get a handle on. Maybe I need to give them another go some other day.
I realized that the “best” character really depends on your playstyle. And, honestly, that’s what makes the game so much fun. You can find success with almost anyone if you put in the time and effort. I’m still learning and still experimenting, but that’s the beauty of fighting games! I’m going to keep on practicing and testing out new characters and hopefully I’ll get better over time. My notes are all over the place, but hey, I’m learning, and that’s the important thing.
