Okay, so today I wanted to figure out what exactly constitutes a “tripping penalty” in the NFL. I’d heard the term a bunch, but honestly, I wasn’t 100% sure on the specifics. Time to dive in!

My Little Research Journey
First, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. You know, the usual suspects – just typed in “tripping penalty NFL” to see what popped up.
I scrolled through a few articles. From what I gathered tripping is using your leg or foot to obstruct any opponent it doesnt matter if they have the ball or not.
I watched a couple of videos to see it happen. Some were pretty obvious, others looked a little more accidental, I guess.
Putting It All Together
So, after doing my little investigation, I feel like I have a decent handle on the tripping penalty. I also understand that it’s a 10 yard penalty. The penalty can be against the offense or defense.
Basically, you can’t stick your leg out and make someone fall down. Seems pretty straightforward, right? I’m sure there are some nuances that refs have to consider, but that’s the general idea.
