Okay, so I’ve been tinkering with my golf gear lately, trying to find that perfect setup, you know? And I stumbled upon Charl Schwartzel’s WITB (What’s In The Bag), and figured, “Why not give it a shot?” I mean, the guy’s a Masters champion, so he must be doing something right.

The Driver Experiment
First thing I did was look at his driver. Now, I’m not a pro, not even close, so I wasn’t about to go out and buy the exact same club. Instead, I focused on the specs. I checked the loft, the shaft flex, that kind of stuff. I then dug through my own bag (and my buddy’s garage – thanks, Mark!) to find something that at least matched up in terms of numbers.
- Checked the loft.
- Figured the shaft.
- Tried to adjusted my old driver.
Irons and Wedges: Getting the Gapping Right
Next up, the irons. This was more about understanding the distances he gets with each club. I headed to the driving range, armed with my own set, and just started hitting balls. I paid attention to how far each iron went, trying to get a feel for the gaps between them.
I also spent some time on the chipping green, working on my short game. I used my own wedges. It’s all about practice, practice, practice.
The Putter: Feel is Everything
Putter is real personal. It is hard to say one is better than another. I didn’t try the same model. I just did a lot of putting drills on the practice green, trying to improve my distance control and accuracy.
The Outcome?
So, did I magically transform into Charl Schwartzel after this little experiment? Nope. My scores didn’t suddenly plummet. But, it did make me think more critically about my own equipment and how it all works together. I learned a lot about gapping, and it definitely got me more focused on practicing with a purpose.
I still adjust my gear every now and then. Maybe one day I could find the best setup. But for now, I will keep digging!
