Alright, let’s talk about this basketball coach, you know, the one from Michigan State. Folks keep jabberin’ about him, so I figured I’d put in my two cents.
This fella, Tom Izzo, that’s his name, been coachin’ them Spartans for donkey’s years. I ain’t no spring chicken myself, and even I remember him bein’ around. He’s like that old oak tree in the yard – been there forever, seen it all.
Now, some folks, they love him. They say he’s the best darn coach there ever was. Always gettin’ them boys to play hard, winnin’ games, goin’ to that March Madness thing. You know, that big tournament where all the college teams go at it.
- They say he’s tough, but fair.
- Makes them boys work their tails off.
- But he also cares about ’em, like a mama hen with her chicks.
And I gotta say, seein’ them boys play, they do play hard. Runnin’ up and down that court like their pants are on fire. Passin’ the ball, shootin’ hoops… it’s somethin’ to watch, I tell ya.
But then there’s other folks, they ain’t so sure. They say he’s gettin’ old, that the game’s passed him by. They say he can’t recruit the good players no more, that his team ain’t what it used to be.
And sometimes, I gotta say, I see their point. This year, for example, they had some ups and downs. Some games they looked like world-beaters, other games they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.
Heard tell there was even some trouble with one of the players, a young fella named Richardson or somethin’. Got hurt, I think. And that Akins boy, he had a good game the other night, scored a whole bunch of points. But one good game don’t make a season, now does it?
And that’s the thing about basketball, ain’t it? You gotta be consistent. You gotta show up every night ready to play. And that’s what folks expect from Izzo’s teams. They expect ’em to be tough, to be competitive, to win.
Izzo himself, he’s always talkin’ about how the team needs to improve, how they gotta work harder. He don’t make excuses, I’ll give him that. If they lose, he takes the blame. If they win, he gives credit to the players.
And that’s somethin’ I admire, you know? A man who takes responsibility. A man who ain’t afraid to admit when he’s wrong. A man who stands by his boys, through thick and thin.
So, is Izzo still a good coach? Well, that’s for you to decide. Me, I think he’s alright. He’s been doin’ this a long time, he knows what he’s doin’. And even if he ain’t winnin’ championships every year, he’s still got them Spartans fightin’. And that’s more than you can say for some coaches, that’s for sure.
Anyways, I reckon we’ll just have to wait and see how this season shakes out. Maybe Izzo will prove all the doubters wrong. Maybe he’ll lead them Spartans back to the promised land. Or maybe he’ll decide it’s time to hang up his whistle and call it a day. Only time will tell, I suppose.
But one thing’s for sure: that Tom Izzo, he’s a fixture at Michigan State. He’s part of the fabric of that school, part of the community. And whether you love him or hate him, you gotta respect what he’s done.
He’s built a program, see? A program that stands for somethin’. A program that people care about. And that, in my book, is somethin’ to be proud of.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about basketball has made me hungry.
