Alright, let’s talk about this Boston Celtics mascot, Lucky. You know, that little green fella with the funny hat.
Who is this Lucky guy anyway?
Well, they say he’s a leprechaun. Yep, one of them magical little dudes from Ireland. Don’t ask me how he got to Boston, probably took a boat or somethin’. This Lucky, he ain’t just any leprechaun, mind you. He’s the leprechaun for the Celtics, been jumpin’ around and causin’ a ruckus since, what, 2003? Some fella named Damon Lee Blust, he was the first one wearin’ the suit, until 2009. Then some other guy took over after 2010, but who cares, they all look the same in that getup.
Why a leprechaun, you ask?
Heck, it’s all about them Irish folks in Boston. Seems like a whole bunch of ’em came over from Ireland way back when, in the 1800s, I think. So, the fella who started the Celtics team, Mr. Brown, he figured, “Hey, lots of Irish here, let’s call ‘em the Celtics!” And what goes with Irish stuff? Leprechauns, that’s what! Just like that breakfast cereal, Lucky Charms. You know, the one with the marshmallows? That Lucky fella is a leprechaun too. Maybe they’re cousins or somethin’. Our Lucky, though, he likes pizza with green peppers. Fancy, huh? He also likes the number 18, says it’s the next championship the Celtics gonna win. Hope he’s right, Lord knows them boys need a win.
What does this Lucky do?
- He dances around like a fool.
- He gets the crowd all riled up.
- He high-fives the little kids.
- He probably drinks a lot of green soda. I dunno, just guessin’.
He wears this bright green suit, and a big hat, and has a big ol’ goofy grin on his face all the time. And don’t forget them shamrocks everywhere. They’re on the uniforms, on the logo, everywhere you look! Seems like them Irish really love them shamrocks, just like they love them leprechauns. They say he does all kinds of crazy dunks too. Front somersaults, 360s, even some Statue of Liberty thing. Sounds like he’s showin’ off if you ask me, but hey, that’s his job, I guess.
Is he important?
Well, I reckon so. The kids love him. And the grown-ups, well, they pretend they don’t, but they secretly enjoy his silly antics. Keeps things lively, you know? Besides, every team gotta have a mascot. It’s like havin’ a dog, you just gotta have one. And this Lucky fella, he’s our dog, our crazy, green, Irish dog. He’s part of the whole Celtics thing, like the green uniforms and them loud fans. You can’t have one without the other, you see?
So, there you have it.
That’s the lowdown on Lucky, the Boston Celtics mascot. A little green fella who dances, and cheers, and brings a bit of Irish luck to the team. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go find me some Lucky Charms. All this talk about leprechauns got me hungry.
And remember, go Celtics! Even if they don’t always win, at least we got Lucky to keep us entertained.
One more thing, I heard some folks say Lucky had a different accent in some commercials a few years back. Said he sounded all American-like. Hmph, that ain’t right. A leprechaun needs to sound like he comes from the old country, you know? Like he just stepped off the boat from Ireland. Otherwise, he’s just a fella in a green suit, and what fun is that?
